Carson City woman jailed, admits taking $1,800 from wallet dropped by casino customer

A 51-year-old Carson City woman was arrested early Thursday for felony grand larceny after allegedly picking up a dropped wallet from a casino customer, taking $1,800 inside and later saying she burned the wallet, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Kassie Kristine Herling was taken into custody at 2:53 a.m. in the 900 block of South Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, Carson City dispatch received a call from casino security for a report of grand larceny. Deputies met with casino security and were informed by a customer that his wallet had been stolen. Security said they located video surveillance of the incident.

The deputy reviewed video footage that shows the victim sitting at a slot machine. He then stands up and his wallet falls out of his lap onto the ground next to the slot machine. He doesn’t notice his wallet fell to the ground. A female, later identified as Kassie Herling, is then seen walking over to where the victim was sitting a few moments before. She bends over and picks up the man’s wallet off the ground. She then walks away with the wallet to where her male companion is playing on a slot machine. Herling hands the wallet to the man, the video shows.

Deputies met with the victim who said there was $1,800 cash in the wallet. He told investigating deputies that he had gotten paid that day and cashed the check at the casino. Casino security verified the man as having cashed the check and verified the amount.

With that information, deputies went to the 4300 block of Silver Sage to speak with Herling and the male companion. Both confirmed they were at the casino, and both said the video footage the deputy reviewed was a wallet that belonged to the unnamed male companion of Herling and not that of the victim.

The deputy then continued to ask questions, and it appeared the woman was being deceptive about the incident and said she knew nothing about the victim or him losing a wallet.

The video showed the victim, the wallet and Herling, a few moments later handing the wallet to the male companion. She was arrested and read her Miranda rights. She said she understood and wanted to continue to speak.

Herling said she wanted “to come clean” and said she thought the wallet belonged to her male companion. She said she picked it up and took the money inside. The amount was $1,800, she said. It should be noted that she was never informed during the investigation about the amount of money contained in the wallet.

She then said she burned the wallet in a fire at her home and that she would return the money to the victim if the deputy took her back to her residence.

She would not tell the deputy where the money was located. She was taken into custody for suspicion of grand larceny. Investigating officers were unable to determine if her male companion was involved in the incident. Bail: $25,000.
