Carson City man arrested after calling 911 on his estranged wife and reporting false information
A Carson City man was arrested after he anonymously and falsely called 911 and reported that his estranged wife was driving erratically, blowing stop signs and was possibly under the influence.
The 45-year-old man faces a gross misdemeanor charge of misusing 911 emergency dispatch and a misdemeanor charge of being in violation of a restraining order after allegedly using the Carson City Sheriff's Office under false pretenses to make contact with his spouse. His bail was set at $2,500.
According to the arrest report, Carson City dispatch sent a message out to officers of a possible DUI driver at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday. The driver was described being in a dark Dodge Durango, traveling north on Roop Street from Fairview. The caller told dispatch the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and was not stopping at stop signs.
The arresting officer was in the area and located the vehicle on North Roop and Washington street. The vehicle turned east on William. The officer reports that he didn't see any signs that the driver was possibly intoxicated, according to the arrest report.
The registration on the vehicle was run and it came back that the vehicle had an expired registration. The officer initiated a stop and made contact with the female driver.
The officer didn't smell, see or hear any indicators that the woman was intoxicated. He advised the woman she was stopped because someone called in and stated that she was speeding, running stop signs and possibly intoxicated, according to the arrest report.
The woman then told the officer that she believed it was her estranged husband that called and made the report and advised the officer that she had a temporary restraining order against him. The woman submitted to sobriety tests and her results were 0.00, according to the report.
With dispatch confirming that the woman's husband had a restraining order on him, the officer asked dispatch who the reporting phone caller was. Dispatch advised the male subject had called 911 and wanted to remain anonymous and that a phone number was displayed.
The officer asked the woman what her estranged husband's phone number was and it matched the call that came to dispatch, according to the arrest report. The man was contacted by authorities at a home in the neighborhood of Gambrel and Bob White streets. He was asked his name and then was arrested.
