Walks Saturday in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon to bring awareness to suicide prevention
Carson City’s fourth annual 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bob McFadden Plaza, 223 W. Third St. Other walks are planned the same day in Gardnerville, Silver Springs and Reno.
Partnership Carson City is teaming up with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention to host the local walk.
In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month in September, the walk is aimed at educating the community about the resources available for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, as well as for their families. Nationally, every 12 minutes someone dies by suicide. Nevada is ranked within the top 5 states of highest suicide rates.

Meanwhile, leaders across the state are working together to prevent suicide in Nevada. Teal and purple ribbons represent suicide awareness and prevention.
Saturday, Sept. 10 was designated World Suicide Prevention Day. The ribbons adorn the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol in Carson City as well in Reno, where the Grand Sierra Resort campaign is “Turning Nevada Teal and Purple.”
“By turning the various Nevada communities teal and purple we are bringing in the power of connection which in turn builds alliance, resiliency and strength for those at risk of suicide and brings opportunity for a positive future,” said Janett Massolo, the statewide walk coordinator, and trainer and outreach facilitator for the Office of Suicide Prevention.
Suicide Prevention Week 2018, which continues now through Saturday, will be highlighted in Nevada by the 12th Annual “Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope” 12 communities across the state.

The goal of the walking events is to increase awareness of the devastating effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide. The event is sponsored by the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention with support from the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention and the various community coalitions.
Together we can reduce the number of families and communities impacted by a needless and tragic death.
