Carson City arrests: Two in custody after being found in stolen car with burglary tools
Two men were arrested early Thursday morning after they were found in a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Sparks, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.
John Paul Palmer and Bradley Jonathan Carr, listed as transients, were taken into custody. Each face charges of suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of burglary tools.
According to the arrest report, at 3:48 a.m. a deputy was patrolling the area of East William Street and observed a vehicle parked in a parking lot. The deputy approached the vehicle and ran the license plate through dispatch. Dispatch advised it was reported stolen out of Sparks on Sept. 2.
Deputies arrived and performed a high risk felony stop. The two men inside the vehicle were detained and both read their Miranda warning. The men waived their rights, the arrest report states.
Palmer told a deputy he was approached by a man at the rib cookout in Sparks who offered him $20 worth of meth if he took the vehicle. Palmer told the deputy he took the vehicle and the meth. He said he picked up Carr in Reno and drove to South Lake Tahoe before stopping in Carson City to rest.
At jail, a deputy interview Carr who said he was still aware of his Miranda warning and that he would speak. He confirmed that he was picked up by Palmer in Reno. He said they both drove to South Lake Tahoe and stated they drove the vehicle to Carson City from South Lake Tahoe. He said they stropped driving in Carson City because they were almost out of fuel. Carr told the deputy that he did not know the vehicle was stolen. He said that he and Palmer had smoked meth a couple days prior, the report states.
During a search of the vehicle, there was a bag that contained the following items, the report says, are consistent with burglary tools: a pry bar, bolt cutters, a hammer, three screw drivers and a lock pick made out of a paper clip. The bag of tools was located in the right front passenger floor board. Both men were also charged with possession of burglary tools. Bail for each: $12,500.
