Carson City 4-Hers prepare for 'Rockets to the Rescue' national 4-H experiment
To kick off the new school year, Carson City 4-H will participate in the annual 4-H National Science Experiment. This year’s project revolves around the popular program, “Rockets to the Rescue” where youth will be tasked with one mission.
In light of the recent natural disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan, the National 4-H Council is asking youth to design and build an aerodynamic food transportation device that can deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. Youth will learn engineering concepts, develop math skills, learn about nutrition and help solve a relevant, global issue.
“Engaging youth early in scientific exploration has been shown to spark a lasting interest in the sciences,” said Jim Barcellos, Youth Programming Specialist. “Science can often seem intimidating to young people, but 4-H National Youth Science Day makes science fun, real, and accessible. Kids will learn about cutting edge technologies and then take the next step to lead by applying what they’ve learned in their very own community.”
A build day is scheduled for Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 1870 Russell Way, Carson City. The Build Day will introduce the rocket concepts, construct rockets and test their ability to fly.
A presentation of results and a viewing of the rockets and their course can be viewed at a special National 4-H Experiment Presentation to be held on Wednesday, October 8, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Carson City Cooperative Extension Conference Room, 2621 Northgate Lane. The presentation will include a celebration of our experiment and National 4-H week. For more information on the national 4-H experiment and to reserve a spot at the above sessions, call the Carson City/Storey County 4-H office at 887-2252.
