NDOT offers travel advice along Lake Tahoe's State Route 28 shared use path work zone
CARSON CITY — In the midst of Tahoe’s busy summer tourism season, the Nevada Department of Transportation is offering reminders for convenient and safe access to outdoor recreation and businesses within the State Route 28 Shared Use Path and Safety, Stormwater Enhancements construction zone.
When planning travel through the work zone, drivers are encouraged to allow for extra time to reach their destination and to be aware of vehicle fuel/charge levels before entering work zones. See a video of the project below or click here.
Motorists are reminded to plan accordingly when accessing popular Lake Tahoe beach locations and trailheads. Roadside parking is not allowed within construction zone and some beach access from SR 28 may be closed due to construction of the path.
Sand Harbor State Park is typically full by 9 a.m. with gates opening at 8 a.m., which causes congestion during that time. Signage indicating if Sand Harbor parking is full is noted at both end of the work zones.
It is recommended to take the East Shore Express operated by Tahoe Transportation District from Incline Village to Sand Harbor.
With afternoons being a high-traffic period on the corridor, it is recommended to avoid travel in the construction zone if possible between 2-4 p.m.
Depending on traveler’s destination, potential alternate routes to consider are State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway) and U.S. 50 over Spooner Summit.
Businesses surrounding the construction zone have been and will remain open.
Motorists should anticipate delays of 20 to 30 minutes with flagger-controlled single lane closures in multiple locations through mid-October. Daytime lane closures take place Mondays through Fridays.
Nighttime work is Sundays through Thursdays, resuming Sunday, Aug. 12 and continuing through mid-October.
A full road closure (tentatively between Lakeshore Drive and Spooner Summit) will occur in the fall following the Labor Day holiday to install the first phase of pathway bridges. Details surrounding dates, times and duration will be announced in advance.
NDOT has contracted Granite Construction to implement the State Route 28 Shared Use Path, Water Quality, and Safety Improvement project. The multi-year project is constructing a three-plus mile shared-use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
Three new parking areas near the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café will also provide safer parking options. More than 2.5 million vehicles a year travel on State Route 28, mixing with as many as 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists who park and recreate near the roadside on peak days, creating safety and accessibility concerns on the mountain highway.
Construction of the path is on schedule, with completion anticipated in late 2018 or spring 2019 depending on weather and construction impacts. Information is available at www.nevadadot.com/SR28 or by calling (775) 888-7000.
