Carson City arrest log: Man arrested after car chase

A 40-year-old man was arrested Friday afternoon following a brief vehicle chase, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Anthony Robert Diaz of Gardnerville was arrested on East John Street at 4:32 p.m. for suspicion of felony eluding after he had failed to stop for law enforcement attempting to pull him over for a traffic violation, the deputy's arrest report said.

According to the report, a sheriff's deputy had observed a pickup driving in the bicycle lane while traffic in front of it was stopped at a red light. The suspect pickup then failed to stop at the red light intersection, instead illegally accelerating through it at a high rate of speed.

At that point, the deputy activated his emergency lights and approached the pickup from behind, attempting to perform a traffic stop. But the vehicle instead abruptly veered left, the report said, crossing two lanes of traffic, driving to the left of vehicles in front of him stopped at another red traffic light.

The pickup crossed into left turn lane and turned right, driving through the intersection on a red light. The deputy activated his siren next in pursuit of the suspect vehicle, the report said.

The pickup still failed to stop, according to the report, instead steering abruptly into the left lane and making an illegal left turn onto John Street, cutting off other vehicles.

The suspect vehicle also drove illegally across opposing traffic lanes during the pursuit, the report said. The pickup came to an eventual stop on John Street and the pursuing deputy ordered the driver at gunpoint ot put both hands out the vehicle window.

The suspect driver, identified as Diaz, eventually complied after multiple commands, was detained and then subsequently arrested. Bail: $20,000.
