Nugget Project ballot question clears final hurdle
Carson City residents will get to vote on the future of the Carson City Center aka Nugget Project after the Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to put the question on the ballot.
The question will ask voters to approve a 1/4 cent sales tax increase to fund the $28 million Knowledge and Discovery Center that has been the focus of the project for the last 4 years.
One big change from the last time supervisors discussed the ballot question was the removal of the word "advisory." City Manager Larry Werner said that after further consultations, that bonds for the project could not be issued if the question was advisory in nature. State law requires a majority vote of the people to raise sales taxes for this specific use.
The next step for the process is in the hands of County Clerk Alan Glover, who will advertise for volunteers to help write arguments for and against the question, to be included on the ballot.
Werner said that once the board passes the question, that city officials will be barred from explicitly advocating or against the project. He said that they can provide information, but can't pick sides.
