Carson City SET deputies arrest 'last two suspects of a large commercial theft ring'

Three people were arrested by Special Enforcement Team after robbing a local hardware store.

A 31-year-old Hayward, Calif. man was arrested in the area of I-580 and Highway 50 for driving with a license revoked due to DUI, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving without insurance, and speeding 11-15 mph over the posted limit.

With him were three passengers, one a 27-year-old Reno woman named Maggie Marie Giles, the second a 30-year-old Reno man named Mark Lynn Jones, who were both arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of burglary tools, and possession of stolen property. The third passenger was not arrest.

According to the report, SET deputies were driving an unmarked police vehicle patrolling Interstate 580 northbound, near the Clearview Lane overpass, when they observed a vehicle traveling 77 mph in a 65 mph zone. The vehicle wove in and out of traffic without signaling.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver and three passengers, identified as Giles, Jones, and a second woman who was not arrested

The driver, the Calif. man, presented deputies with a Calif. ID and appeared very nervous, according to the report. He was rigid and rambled in his speech about him trying to get away from trouble, the deputy reported, and he said that he was “afraid a vehicle was following,” which the deputy later thought he may have been referring to the deputy.

During the traffic stop, Giles began to fall asleep intermittently, a common sign of opiate use.

According to the report, the driver had a license revoked for DUI, and that he was driving within the revocation period. The man also told deputies he was on probation for felony assault in Calif., and that one of his probation conditions was the leave the state of Calif.

No one in the vehicle had a valid driver’s license, as they were all either suspended or revoked. There was no valid insurance for the vehicle.

The driver was taken into custody, and the passengers were removed. K-9 Deputy Ivo was dispatched, and he conducted an exterior free air sniff around the vehicle. Ivo gave a positive alert to drug odor within the vehicle.

In the vehicle, deputies located approximately one ounce of marijuana in the driver’s side door pocket. In the rear left seat area they found a blue wallet which contained aluminum foil with heroin on the surface. There was also a tooter straw, used for inhaling drug fumes, located in a pink basket full of gel pens on the transmission hump in the rear seat area.

In the back seat, deputies also located a magnetic donut and magnetic articulating punch in the back seat, which they stated are devices used by skilled shoplifters in order to defeat Electronic Article Surveillance tags, in order to prevent discovery when items are stolen.

In the trunk, deputies located a backpack with a pair of black gloves inside. Jones admitted the gloves belonged to him, and they appeared to be his size. Inside the backpack, deputies found a white locking case which contained a Dewalt Impact driver in a handbag which also had Jones’ playing card inside. In the backpack was a similar item, according to the report, and both drills had “spider-wraps” still attached, which indicate they had been stolen. The boxes still had inventory tags on them, indicating they came from a local hardware store in Jack’s Valley.

Deputies spoke with Giles and Jones, who relayed the following:

Giles admitted she is a recovering heroin addict and knew of the foil in her wallet. She suspected there may have been “one point” of heroin on the foil, but she forgot she had it in her wallet. She said she was on pre-trial supervision with the City of Sparks for commercial burglary. She admitted she had just stolen two Dewalt tools and assorted other peripheral items from the hardware store just before the traffic stop.

She later attempted to take responsibility for a small container of drugs and paraphernalia int he trunk of the vehicle, located in Jones’ backpack.

Jones admitted he knew the contents of the white locked case as deputies shook it in front of him. He said there would be a “dab rig” inside, which deputies later located in the case along with methamphetamine, heroin, and other assorted paraphernalia. He admitted to helping Giles steal from the hardware store. He also had a piece of foil with burned residue in his wallet, and he admitted he had been using heroin as well.

Deputies spoke with representatives of the hardware store, who told deputies that Jones and Giles were “the last two suspects of a large (10+ suspects) commercial theft ring which targeted (hardware stores) in Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley for power tools and other goods,” according to the report.

The three were taken into custody without incident, and the second woman from the vehicle was released with a small dog.

The case was forwarded to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
