Virginia City sizzles with Chili on the Comstock this weekend
The smell of hot chili will permeate the region as Virginia City, Nev.’s 32nd annual Chili on the Comstock heats up this weekend, May 2 – 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The historic mining town plays host to more than 30 professional and amateur chili cooks as well as hundreds of hungry festival-goers. Even more are expected to participate in the Fireball Saloon Crawl, a sampling of themed beverages from 15 historic Virginia City locations.
New this year is the Fun with the Runs! inaugural 5K that starts on the main drag, C Street. The run starts at 10 a.m. with runners and walkers making their way through the hilly terrain back to the cook-off venue. Registration is open online until midnight Friday, May 1 or in person on the morning of May 2. All run participants receive a t-shirt, nap sack and two Cautious Tasting Kits to enjoy after the run.
More family-friendly activities include the Kids Zone with a bungee trampoline, giant slide and bounce house located at the Delta Saloon parking lot. Single tickets sold the day of the event.
The two-day event brings the best chili cookers from around the west to complete daily for a chance to head to the International Chili Society World’s Championship Chili Cookoff later this year. Cash and prizes are also awarded, including a people’s choice selection.
