NDOW: 2016 big game tag application deadline nears
If you are one of those people that like to wait until the last minute to get things done, then the Nevada Department of Wildlife has good news for you: the deadline for the big game tag application is Monday, April 18, 2016.
Sportsmen looking to apply for the hunt online can visit huntnevada.com. Online applicants have until 11 p.m. Hunters that choose to use the traditional paper application must use the U.S. Postal Service to submit their applications, which must be received by the Wildlife Administrative Services Office by 5 p.m. to qualify.
Nevada offers a good variety of big game opportunities for deer, elk, bear, pronghorn antelope, mountain goat and bighorn sheep. The Silver State is one of just a few states to possess three sub-species of bighorn sheep (desert, rocky mountain and California). Deer, elk and antelope offer additional options for weapon type (rifle, archery, and muzzleloader), sex (male or female) and season dates.
Sportsmen are also reminded to take advantage of Nevada’s specialty tags (Silver State Tags, Partners in Wildlife Tags and the Nevada Dream Tags). The Silver State Tag allows hunters the chance to hunt one of four premier big game species (mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope) anywhere in the state and also gives hunters the chance to win thousands of dollars of hunting gear as well. The tags are available through Nevada’s tag application process.
Partnership in Wildlife is a voluntary and optional participation program that offers unique hunting opportunities to hunt in any unit with an open season for the species listed on the tag, during the season dates when that unit is open for that species, and only with the weapon authorized to be used during that open season. The Nevada Dream Tag is a raffle that gives hunters the opportunity to win premier big game tags while also giving to needed habitat restoration. The tag is similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a life time” tags. To learn more, go to nvdreamtag.org.
To help hunters understand the application process and make informed choices, the Nevada Department of Wildlife provides a vast amount of information. Hunters can find population reports, draw odds and harvest statistics, maps, Hunter Information Sheets and much more on the agency’s website at ndow.org.
The 2016 quotas will be set by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners at their May 13 and 14 meeting in Reno.
