Motorist Advisory: Carson City schoolchildren to participate Wednesday in Nevada Moves Day
Schools in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties will participate in Wednesday's statewide Nevada Moves Day, with walking and bicycling events planned for the day.
Motorists are advised there will be more children walking and bicycling to school on this day; and as is the case every day, drivers should watch for children and be mindful of reduced speeds and varying school start times in school zones.
According to the National Weather Service, rain is likely during the morning and afternoon on this first day of Spring. Participants should dress accordingly.
Nevada Moves Day is a statewide event started in 2010 by State of Nevada Safe Routes to School Coordinators. The day celebrates the fun and benefits of walking and bicycling to school. It also encourages K-8 students, school staff and families to get physically active.
Walking and bicycling to school events are planned for schools throughout the region and statewide.
“This is an opportunity for children to learn about pedestrian and bicycling safety as they make their way to school,” NDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager Jamie Borino explained earlier this month. “Walking or biking to school reduces school zone traffic that results from children being driven to school. We hope to bring a safe environment to school zones and reduce traffic congestion. We hope families will take part in an organized Nevada Moves Day event or plan their own!”
Motorists should also only pass bicyclists when it is safe — with at least three feet of space between the bicycle and vehicle — and never overtake a vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians. Pedestrians and bicyclists should only cross streets when safe, and look both ways before and while crossing.
In Carson City, principals and staff will meet at the following locations and walk to the school with the students. All students who walk to or at school will be recognized.
