Carson City arrests: Man jailed after altercation over purchase of shrimp, cheese and vodka

A 62-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of battery and a contempt of court warrant after an altercation with a grocery store employee, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.

According to the arrest report, officers were called to the store in the 500 block of East Willam Street for a report of a battery. Deputies learned a store employee noticed a man walking out of the store with a bottle of vodka, shrimp and a block of cheese that was not in a bag.

The employee told officers she asked the man for his receipt to show he had purchased the items. The employee stated the man began cursing at her and put the items down on the ground in front of him. The employee stated that as she went to pick up the items the male swung his arm, striking her on the nose. A deputy could see a distinct redness on the bridge of the woman's nose, according to the report.

The employee shoved the male away. At that point other store employees intervened and the male left the store and left the items behind. The employee wrote a statement and said she wanted to pursue criminal charges for battery.

A witness and store manager said the male suspect became aggressive and yelled and cursed at the employee and that they saw the man swing his arm, striking the employee in the face, the report states.

While interviewing the manager it was learned the suspect did actually purchase the items but refused to bag the items. The manager also wrote a statement about the incident and told investigating deputies they would provide video surveillance of the incident Thursday.

Deputies located the suspect on the west side of the parking lot and made contact. The man identified himself with a Montana identification card, the report states. The man had a confirmed warrant for contempt of court issued by Carson City Justice Court.

He was placed into custody for the warrant and for the alleged battery. Both are misdemeanors. While searching the man's person, the deputy located a grocery store receipt listing a bottle of vodka, shrimp and cheese, which were the items purchased by the suspect. Bail: $1,637.

Dispatch advised the man's registration was expired. He could not provide insurance on the vehicle. During the vehicle inventory before being towed a deputy located a small clear plastic baggie with white powder residue on the floor board of the driver's seat.
