Taste the fashion of the Big Apple in Carson City
There’s no need to travel to the Big Apple to celebrate New York Fashion Week. Fashionistas can walk the red carpet at The Nevada State Museum as part of a three-week film festival organized by Mark Salinas, the city’s arts and culture coordinator.
“The general conception of fashion is limited to what people see in runway shows, which (did you know) lasts about 17 minutes,” explained Salinas, who worked several seasons for Zac Posen, a designer and “Project Runway” judge. “There are months and months of pre- and post-production to these shows, and these documentaries do an outstanding job of discovering the workplace universality in it all.”

Presented by the Carson City Visitors Bureau, the three-film series begins Friday, Feb. 3 and continues each Friday through Feb. 17. Doors for each open at 6 p.m., at the museum, 600 N. Carson St., with the movie beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“These three films were carefully selected to balance the humor, the creativity, the drama, the history that will relate to everyone, whether you wear Wrangler or Yves Saint Laurent,” Salinas said.
The documentary festival, he said, was inspired by a lecture presented by Jan Loverin, the Curator of Clothing and Textiles at the Marjorie Russell Clothing and Textile Research Center, about underwear 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada State Museum.
“I am anticipating a 2017 with more creative collaborations such as this one,” Salinas said. “I read of Jan’s lecture and thought to pull in a film concept since this time of year is NYC Fashion Week.”
Film-goers can pose on the red carpet 6-6:30 p.m. Guests can then go online to find the album to view their photos. Save the ticket for a 15 percent discount at Cafe Adele’s.
“Audience members will enter the museum with a 30-foot red carpet, velvet ropes and paparazzi experience,” Salinas said. “And after the film they can enjoy a creative dinner and drink at neighboring Café at Adele’s. That’s a VIP evening in Carson City.”
Tickets for each feature are required. They are free to museum members and $8 for non-members. Limited seating is available.
