Youth Violence Prevention Plan work underway by Healthy Communities Coalition
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey will offer a special presentation on youth violence prevention planning during its February gathering.
In addition to special presentations on various topics, each public Coalition meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, workforce development, etc. The Coalition will convene at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m.
Youth Violence Prevention: The Coalition is inviting any interested person or group to take part in creating a youth violence prevention action plan with the Lyon, Storey and Mineral regions. During the February 10 meeting, new youth violence prevention training funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be introduced.
The Coalition was among 6 groups in the U.S. chosen by the CDC to pilot new training and resources to help communities to plan violence prevention strategies that work to build safe communities and stop youth violence before it happens, and intervention and treatment strategies after it happens.
“Keeping youth violence from happening in the first place is essential”, said Christy McGill, executive director of Healthy Communities. “Violence is a leading cause of injury, disability, and premature death among youth, and depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other health problems are all associated with that violence.”
The CDC is encouraging a public health approach to preventing youth violence that is based on the best available research and with the involvement of the entire community so that people from all parts of the community work together to work on the solutions: representatives from public health, law enforcement, education, economic development, mental health, social services, substance abuse, business, etc. are all invited to work together to create a regional plan to prevent youth violence.
In addition to prevention, McGill noted that intervention and treatment strategies will also be considered: “We need to prevent youth violence, and also respond after it has already occurred to stop further violence and to deal with the physical and emotional consequences.” McGill explained that intervention and treatment strategies will include law enforcement, medical and mental health services.
