National Night Out, film classic at BAC, fitness events and more Tuesday around Carson City

Heading into Tuesday Aug. 6, which means the safest family celebration of the year at the 17th annual Carson City National Night Out. This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Also happening Tuesday is a free robotics mini-camp for kids in nearby Silver City, Reciprocity Inc. will host a fundraiser at Rustically Divine, there's the Culinary Traveler’s Club's Polynesian Paradise featured at Bleu Café; the Carson City Classic Cinema Club will feature a Sci-Fi favorite at the BAC, plus fitness outings and more. Sue Meuschke, executive director for the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCEDSV), was honored today with a proclamation from the office of the governor for her 30 years of service as “a dedicated and talented community leader, collaborator and advocate for survivors” for the State of Nevada, advocating for victims of domestic and sexual violence and increasing awareness of the issues.

2015 National Night Out Carson City returns Tuesday to Mills Park

With the theme of violence prevention, Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host 13 years of community partnership with local agencies, groups and nonprofit organizations Tuesday at Mills Park with the 2015 National Night Out.

Returning this year after a last minute cancelation in 2014 because of heavy rain, this three hour annual family event is designed to bring children and their parents to the park for activities, music, information booths, demonstrations, hot dogs and refreshments. Festivities begin at 5 p.m.

Carson City Sheriff Furlong awarded DARE, DEA America Law Enforcement Executive of Year

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong is the winner of the 2015 DEA, DARE Law Enforcement Executive of the Year, officials announced Monday.

Francisco X. Pegueros, President and CEO of DARE America and Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Los Angeles Field Division Anthony D. Williams made the announcement. The coveted award is given to a senior law enforcement officer who epitomizes an extraordinary commitment to drug prevention and enforcement.

UNR students, faculty and staff stand up for sexual assault awareness

Since the February release of results from a student survey regarding sexual conduct and safety, a number of efforts to strengthen a supportive campus climate, one with zero tolerance for sexual assault, sexual misconduct and other life-damaging actions, have been put in place at the University of Nevada, Reno.

In March, the University launched a 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline, allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.

Nevada Public Health launches websites to combat sexual violence

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health launched two new Nevada-specific websites Tuesday to help schools protect students from sexual assaults on college campuses.

The websites, www.preventsexualviolenceNV.org and www.stepupstopviolence.org, define sexual assault and consent and offer approaches for individuals, students, and community members to safely intervene when observing a potentially high-risk situation.

National Night Out canceled due to weather, Mills Park conditions

UDPATE: The Carson City Sheriff’s Office regrets to inform everyone that the 12th Annual National Night Out in Mills Park, set for Tuesday, August 5 at 5 p.m. has been canceled.

It has been determined that with the park's current ground saturation from the rain, the quantity of “heavy” public safety vehicles, aircraft and equipment that was scheduled to be on the grassy area of the park would cause irreparable damage. Further, at this late hour, there is insufficient time to orchestrate a reasonable relocation of the event location.

National anti-bullying group to give May 10 talk in Carson City

Carson City will host a presentation on bullying by a Philadelphia-based nonprofit agency that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc. will discuss what many say is a national crisis affecting communities across the country. The Saturday, May 10 presentation, Bullying: The Silent Threat, will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street, in Carson City.

Carson City sheriff endorses Connecticut school shooting position statement

Nine school violence prevention researchers and practitioners nationwide have developed a position statement released nationwide Wednesday regarding the Dec. 14 Connecticut school shootings.

The statement has been endorsed by more than 100 organizations representing more than 4 million professionals, including Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. It is in response to the tragic acts of violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School and updates the School Shootings Position Statement released nationally following the school-related shootings of 2006.
