Carson City forecast: Flood Watch issued, 6 to 12 inches of rain in Sierra possible this weekend
With the current storm still producing rain around the Carson City region, forecasters have turned their attention to the next system that will arrive this weekend bringing warmer conditions, rising snow levels and the potential for flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the Sierra and western Nevada this weekend, including Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County with the potential of receiving 6-12 inches of rain in the Sierra that have created serious flooding concerns. In Carson City, sandbags will be made available at the city's public works yard located at 3505 Butti Way. Bring a shovel. Go here for real-time maps of the Carson City area that will show areas of flooding.
Lyon County Manager Jeff Page announced county personnel are preparing for the potential for flooding. Sandbag locations will be available throughout the central Lyon County corridor.
Lyon County has placed sand and sandbags at the following locations:
— Lyon County Animal Services, Highway 50 east of Ramsey cutoff
— Stagecoach Community Center, 8105 Highway 50
— Dayton Utilities Keystone Property, 404 Keystone Drive
— Fire Station 35 at 231 Corral Drive
— Fire Station on Dayton Valley Road, 460 Dayton Valley Road

The atmospheric river will likely produce a period of intense rainfall with snow levels rising as high as 9,000 feet early Sunday morning to Monday morning. Rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are possible around the Lake Tahoe Basin and in the Carson Range, with up to 3 inches of rain in the lower elevations around Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Fallon, Yerington, and Reno-Sparks.
This combination of intense rain on saturated soils will lead to runoff. Recent snowfall around the Lake Tahoe Basin may be blocking drainage paths causing water to back up near culverts and urban areas.
Fooding of creeks, streams, urban areas and farmlands is likely. This includes Washoe Valley and areas near the Little Valley fire burn scar. Travel will be difficult with some roads covered by water.
Forecasters say there will likely be a significant rise on the Truckee and East Fork, West Fork and Carson rivers, though the extent of the flood impacts is uncertain at this time, according to the weather service.
Creeks, streams, urban areas, farmland and recent burn scars ares the most prone to flooding. Excessive rainfall may also generate rock and mud slides along steep terrain. Those with interests in Washoe Valley and along creeks and streams and along the Truckee and Carson Rivers should begin to take action and remove property in the flood zone areas.
