Pediatric Rheumatology Services Now Offered at Children's Specialty Center of Nevada - Reno

Children in Northern Nevada affected by autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and scleroderma now have access to a pediatric rheumatologist at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada in Reno.
Rhina Castillo, MD, is now part of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation's Visiting Physician Program which brings out-of-state experts in childhood medical treatment to see patients at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada. Castillo, who is board certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric rheumatology, will see patients in Las Vegas and Reno the final week of each month as part of an agreement with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Division of Rheumatology.
There are approximately 150 board certified pediatric rheumatologists practicing in the entire United States. None is currently based in Nevada.
“For our patients to have access to not one, but three pediatric rheumatologists is just incredible and also unheard of in the state of Nevada,” said Annette Logan, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation President and Executive Director. "We're pleased to be able to expand this pediatric specialty into Reno and Northern Nevada," Logan said.
Castillo will join board certified pediatric rheumatologists Drs. Diane Brown and Katherine Marzan, also from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, who travel to Nevada to see patients on a monthly basis as part of the Visiting Physician Program.
Cure 4 The Kids Foundation underwrites the housing and transportation costs for the physicians to travel from Los Angeles each month.
Founded in 2007 by Jonathan Bernstein, MD, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization with the goal of bringing additional specialized pediatric treatments to patients in Nevada.
Cure 4 The Kids operates the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada with outpatient clinics in Las Vegas and Reno. Prior to these clinics, patients were often forced to travel out of state to have access to pediatric specialists.
In addition, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Charity Care Plan ensures that children without medical insurance, or whose family cannot afford treatment, receive the medical attention that can save their lives. The mission of Cure 4 the Kids Foundation is that no child is ever turned away from treatment.
Dr. Castillo earned her medical degree at Universidad Evangelica de El Salvador. She completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in Bronx, NY. She then went on to complete her fellowship in pediatric rheumatology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) before joining the faculty at USC/CHLA.
In her role as a pediatric rheumatologist, Dr. Castillo cares for children with systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, idiopathic uveitis, scleroderma, vasculitis, dermatomyositis and several other autoimmune diseases. She is also actively involved in the education of residents, fellows and medical students.
She is a board certified pediatrician, as well as a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Rheumatology, Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance and the Southern California Rheumatology Society.
