Local Artists Stevenson and Foster Display The Power of Light
Local artists Deborah Stevenson and Deborah Foster collaborate to bring a vibrant new exhibit, The Power of Light, to the Nevada Artists Association Gallery (NAA) Sept. 10 – Oct. 20, 2017. Offering a fresh perspective and dazzling light, this exhibit showcases popular scenes such as Death Valley, Emerald Bay, and Pyramid Lake. The public is invited to attend a free reception with refreshments from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 14 at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and during wine walk.
Deborah Stevenson earned her B.A. in Fine Arts from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO and Masters in Anthropology from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She has always been inspired by nature and sold her first painting at the age of 17. With over 45 years of experience, her style is mature and deeply spiritual. Stevenson is originally from Colorado and moved to Nevada in 2004 to serve as Curator of Education at the Nevada State Museum. Now retired, she paints and hikes full-time.
For Stevenson, art means connecting with the landscape of the heart in a most intimate way. “One has to get really quiet to experience the subtle beauty of Nevada’s desert wildlands. Patience is required, but if I listen long enough, a quality of pervasive stillness and transcendent peace washes over me. Meeting the landscape face-to-face means coming home.”
Stevenson’s genre is naturalism. She works primarily in watercolor and acrylics, layering colors to express light and vibrancy--wild Nevada at its best!
Deborah Foster lives in Carson City and is a 5th generation Nevadan. She was born in Yerington, Nevada has been oil painting since 1999. Foster sketched as a child, took art classes as a student at the University of Nevada, Reno, but she didn’t get serious until she began her formal oil painting instruction from local artist, Tina Tyrrell. Workshops from Ed Garcia, Hal Watt and Kit Knight soon followed. What started as a hobby blossomed into a passion she now finds as necessary as air and water.
Foster enjoys the look achieved by using a palette knife. She believes there is no better way to create vibrant color, depth and texture on the canvas or on a board. Her subjects range from floral and desert scenes to water, animals, and people. She has a definite flair for architecture.
Foster retired in January 2001 from the State of Nevada as a training manager for the Division of Emergency Management. She spent a year coordinating the Community Emergency Management Team program for the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and eight years working as a Reservist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a Training Specialist. Foster is now on the Board of Directors of the Goni Canyon Preservation League and a member of and on the Board of Directors of the NAA. She sells her original oils, Giclée prints and cards in the NAA Gallery and donates art for fund-raising at many charitable events.
