The last weekend of August holds tight to summertime tradition. Get something fresh from the field at Farmers Markets in Carson City, Genoa, and Dayton. Celebrate the end of summer with La Chamba on the Brewery Arts Center outdoor stage – one more season of Levitt Amp Community Concerts successfully behind us. Whether you want something fun to do with your ‘grown-up’ friends or something for the whole family to enjoy, take a look! There’s a little bit for everyone.

SATURDAY:

  • — Early Morning Birdwatching at Washoe Lake State Park - Meet at the Wetlands parking area on the south end of the lake (7am; please arrive 10 minutes early; Meet park staff for a birdwatching walk - We will walk approximately 1.5 miles; Bring binoculars and bird guides if possible, as limited supplies are available to borrow during the program. participants should bring water, a hat, insect repellant, and sun protection; This program is free, but donations are appreciated)
  • — Muscle Powered Day Hike: Tahoe Rim Trail Spooner Summit South to South Camp Peak - Meet at the Hwy 50 Park-and-ride, west of Hwy 395, at 7:15am to carpool (Heavy smoke/unhealthy air quality will cancel this hike; For fit, experienced hikers only - hike is 10.4 miles round-trip; bring at least 2 quarts of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and snacks; Hats, hiking poles, and sunscreen recommended; Dogs will not be permitted; For more info, contact hike leaders Connie Cummings at 415-697-7221 or Alyce Cloutier at 775-250-0282)
  • — Carson City BMX Beginner and New Intermediate Rider Clinics at the Livermore (Edmonds) Sports Complex: 1555 Livermore Lane (Beginners sign up at 7:30am, 8am learn about different parts of the track and how to ride them, how staging and moto sheets work, and basic bike info/control; Beginners/New Intermediate sign up at 9:15am, 9:30am work on successful gate techniques and confident rhythm section riding; $5 per clinic; You do not need to be a member of USABMX member)

As the summer sun begins to heat up, so does the excitement at Dayton Pop Warner as local athletes gear up for a two-day strength and conditioning camp.

In an extremely rare display of colors, the aurora borealis was spotted throughout Northern Nevada Friday night as captured by multiple Carson Now readers. Click on each photo to expand.

This spectacular display is caused by a severe solar storm that is expected to continue through the weekend.

After review of the Nevada Department of Wildlife’s recommendations and consideration by County Advisory Board’s to Manage Wildlife, the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners has approved big game tag quotas for the upcoming 2024-2025 hunting season.

Once again our cat of the week is the winner of our Whisker Wednesday contest at Catmandu. Meet Cutie Pie. While she loves to be called Cutie, you can also call her Pie for short.

On Tuesday, May 14, the Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees will host a meeting at Carson High School at 1111 N. Saliman Street. At the meeting the district will discuss their plan to merge Carson High School and Pioneer Academy.
