Meals on Wheels

My father lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and has been in the same home for 50 years. He is 86 now and shouldn't be living at home alone but he does not want to move.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Bryan Bibee, representing Kiwanis International, a service club with chapters in more than 80 countries and geographic areas around the world. Affiliated clubs make up a total of 600,000 members, who raise in excess of $100 million each year and donate 18.5 million volunteer hours in support of important community projects.

The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Courtney Warner, who has served as Executive Director of the Carson City Senior Center since 2015. In addition to Meals on Wheels and low-cost lunches at the Senior Center's dining room, programs she supervises include educational lectures, fitness and wellness initiatives, and resources for promoting a healthy, independent lifestyle.

Over the past few months Capitol Quilters and Clear Creek Quilters combined their efforts to make more than 450 placemats for the Carson City Meals on Wheels Program. The colorful placemats, made to cheer home-bound clients, will be distributed to the Meals on Wheels clients during the coming holidays along with their delivered meals.

The 2021 Virtual Meals on Wheels fundraiser hosted by Carson City Kiwanis proved to be a success. The event raised $2,100 of which will be donated to the Carson City Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program.

In years past, the event included attendees who enjoyed competitive games of BINGO and a pasta feed. The total amount of donations received benefit the Carson City Senior Citizens Center's Meals on Wheels Program.

Meals on Wheels Carson City received a generous $7,000 grant from the Caesars Foundation to help feed homebound seniors in our local community.

Additionally, 336 cookie tin gifts were donated from Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe to deliver just in time for Christmas!

The Carson City Senior Center and Meals on Wheels Carson City is proud to announce that it will be participating in the 2020 Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America — one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the campaign.

Lawmakers finalized hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts to state agencies on Sunday, adjusting a budget that is set to lose a quarter of the revenue previously projected because of the pandemic and wrapping up a protracted session marked by false starts and delays.

The Virtual Meals on Wheels fundraiser hosted by Carson City Kiwanis proved to be a big success.

The event raised $3,855.44, including a $1,000 anonymous donation and a donation from the club itself of $1,000 donation.

On Tuesday, the Carson City Greenhouse Project broke ground on a new outdoor classroom at the Carson High School site, which will allow the Greenhouse Project's dream of continuing agriculture education to students year round in the Carson City community.

CARSON CITY — After being closed over two and a half months due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Second Wind Thrift Store will reopen on Tuesday, June 2. Everything that you have come to enjoy about shopping at Second Wind will be the same including the great customer service and unmatched treasures.

Carson City Kiwanis would like to take a moment and thank everyone who have participated in our virtual Meals on Wheels fundraiser. There is a strong outpouring of support for our cause to raise money for the local Meals on Wheels program.

As a reminder, we are contiuing to raise funds through Sunday, June 7, 2020.

Carson City Kiwanis supports local causes serving children, youth, elderly and disabled. Focused on this mission, the club hosts an annual Bingo and Pasta Feed to support the Carson City Senior Citizen’s Center Meals on Wheels program. Unfortunately, like many other local events, the club was forced to cancel the April 2020 fundraiser due to COVID-19.

An expansion is underway at Carson City’s own The Greenhouse Project, which will provide more learning opportunities to those who are inclined toward agricultural science.

Well before dawn, a kitchen crew arrives. Ovens are turned on; food is pulled for today’s meal. Sheet pans are lined, steam pans are filled. Hundreds of disposable cups, trays and lids line the countertops ready to be filled. The crew preps intuitively – they’ve done this many times before. The crew is the Carson City Senior Center. It’s just another morning at the Carson City Senior Center.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. YERINGTON — Lyon County has announced the following changes in operations in response to COVID-19 and the Governor’s recent announcement as to the State of Nevada’s Response to COVID-19.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. As closures are announced please visit carson.org/covid19 for information and updates about government services.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a Declaration of Emergency through Resolution 20-05 and a meeting Monday afternoon, according to County Manager Jeff Page.

There was one person who poke against the resolution. Lyon County staff will now begin implementing procedures to address the declaration.

Due to the continuing health and safety concerns surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19), the Carson City Senior Center is closing the Senior Center to the public.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell delivered a proclamation Thursday honoring March for Meals. On March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older.

Heading into the first Thursday in March and we're looking at continued sunshine with a high near 70. Happenings lined up include a Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting, auditions for the Carson City Follies show in July, trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a wood design workshop at Rustically Divine, an artist reception for Galen Brown and Emily Kray at Western Nevada College and a Muscle Powered afternoon hike. CARSON CITY — Comedy thru the Ages, the 2020 production of the Carson Follies, is seeking actors, dancers, singers and stage personnel for its upcoming show July 10-12. Auditions will be held Thursday, March 5, and Tuesday, March 10, from 6-8 p.m. at the Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive in Carson City.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

Jean Marie Hamilton
September 11, 1937 – December 3, 2019

Jean Hamilton passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Tuesday Dec. 3rd.
Jean married Bud Hamilton on December 22, 1956 in Lindsey, California. They moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1972. Jean always wanted to be a nurse and went to nursing school as soon as all her kids were in school. She enjoyed a 37 year career as a Registered Nurse, with the majority of it spent at Carson Tahoe Hospital. Everyone who worked with her, or were under her care, said she was truly the best nurse.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! The Carson Victory Rollers presents the 2019 "Season's Beatings, a Scrimmage for Charity" this Sunday at the Carson City Community Center. Donations collected go to Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.
