This morning there was an annular solar eclipse. The clips started about 8:05 a.m. and lasted for a couple of hours. The pictures are part of a series and were taken at 10 minute intervals. The GIF file is a combination of the series. Although the start was shrouded in cloud cover, the majority of the eclipse was pretty clear.

This afternoon I took a snapshot of the sun to see if there were any sunspots, and it looks like the sun is very active right now.

The smoky rising sun was caught behind the eagle at the intersection of south Carson Street and I-580 as well as the S on the hills to the east of Carson City.

Despite the changes in learning platforms brought on by the coronavirus, Western Nevada College is proud to announce that more than a third of its full-time students were still able to make the fall semester dean’s list.

It’s the annual conundrum. Is it too soon to turn off the irrigation system? With recent nights down to the teens here in Washoe Valley, we turned off the irrigation system and drained it prior to the forthcoming hard freezes. Then we turned off the outside water and drained the hose bibs too. Yet with temperatures last week back in the 60s with low to mid-30s at night, I’m sure I will have to irrigate again soon.

Last weekend, Renee and I fished the Truckee River with a friend. At 7 a.m. we were wearing flannels and jackets, by noon, we were back in tee shirts.

The fishing was very slow, but we did manage a few small rainbows to take our lures.

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! RENO — In time for the holidays, Alaska Airlines will add new service between Reno-Tahoe International and Palm Springs and Los Angeles beginning Dec. 17.

On September 10, 2020, at approximately 2028 hours, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Dispacth Center began receiving multiple 911 calls about an active shooter on the highway in Smith Valley.

UPDATE 3:05PM: Areas of smoke and haze from wildfires will persist into Monday with improved conditions expected Monday night through Wednesday, forecasters say. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, from 1 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday for much of the Carson City region.

After a night washed out with a deep sepia haze resulting from the Creek Fire burning in the southern Sierra, the dense smoke that made its way into northern and western Nevada Saturday night that caused degraded air quality throughout the region now appears to be lifting, according to the National Weather Service.

They wore pajamas, were wrapped in blankets, and carried cups of Dutch Bros and Starbucks as they gathered to celebrate the beginning of their senior year and the almost end of the soothing summer weather. The Class of 2020-2021, while practicing social distancing and wearing the latest fashion in face masks, gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 4 on the bleachers of the CHS football field to watch their sun rise.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management law enforcement recently removed approximately 45 abandoned vehicles illegally dumped on public land. Many of the vehicles were removed from the Mound House area east of Carson City and north of Reno in the Sun Valley area.

It is wonderful to be back in school, to again see the smiling faces of young people walking throughout the building, going from class to class with excitement and anticipation, gently pushing at their friends to move along, so no one ends up being late to class.
