Nevada Humanities, in partnership with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, is launching Humanities in Nature, which is a series of outdoor nature walks that are part of the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation Discover Your Parks walk series at northern Nevada parks.

A case filed by the Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley made it to the U.S. Supreme Court, but was denied by the country’s highest court, which declined to hear the case.

The Rotary Club of Carson City will discuss the history and early settlement of the Mormon Station in Genoa at its next meeting. Park interpreter Chris Johnson is the guest speaker, his presentation will focus on the development of Mormon Station and what life was like for early settlers.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Spooner Lake is one of Nevada’s most popular places to hike, mountain bike, ride horses or simply enjoy nature, and welcomes more than 150,000 visitors every year. On Thursday, the Nevada Division of State Parks is pleased to launch the bidding process for the park’s much-anticipated Spooner Lake Improvement Project, which involves a complete redesign and update of the facilities, including construction of a visitor center and amphitheater.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, Jan. 21 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room in the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Up for discussion includes improvements to the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range, Grants for emergency housing, the proposed Little Lane Village subdivision and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Paul Klein, a partner at Tri-Strategies LTD, a government relations and public affairs firm with offices in Reno and Las Vegas. He will be lobbying on behalf of Compassion & Choices for medical aid-in-dying legislation due to be introduced during the 81st session, which begins February 1st. The bill gives terminally ill people with six months or less to live the option of taking medicine to end their life peacefully.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce new leadership roles for the School Board of Trustees. At their first meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 11, Joe Cacioppo, District 7, was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.

The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday Jan. 12 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater within the Carson City Community Center.

Hello fellow anglers! As we welcomed in 2021, many anglers ascended on Topaz Lake to bring in the new year. I and fellow angler Tom Blotter were amongst the many.

At 6 a.m. Tom and I were on the lake waiting for the official start time. There was an eerie fog-like mist lingering over the lake. It was a cool 18 degrees, and the winds were calm. Our first line went into the water at 6:33 a.m. and the first strike came at 7 a.m.

On Friday, March 13, as the state prepared to shut down, the fate of many four-legged, feathered and scaled residents hung in the balance.

Greg Hall, CEO of the Nevada Humane Society, which has a presence in Reno and Carson City, organized a late-night emergency call with staff. They discussed how to operate amid the threat of COVID-19, a potentially lethal virus that carried so many unknowns. Meanwhile, seven hours south, staff at The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas braced for the worst.

Carson City and Douglas County are again participating in a statewide Christmas tree recycling effort. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of several drop off locations.

Every winter, Carson Valley becomes a nesting ground for bald eagles, golden eagles, falcons, hawks, owls and other wildlife as they congregate to the region. Carson Valley’s expansive open space and cattle ranches provide habitat for the wintering birds of prey.

Carson City is pleased to offer Christmas Tree Recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management, Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the drop off locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. This program continues to be a huge success.

Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases prior to recycling; if the tree is longer than six feet, cut the tree into pieces.

Pick out your favorite ugly holiday sweater for Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space's first ever ugly sweater hike. The hike will take place on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Empire Ranch.

California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts are scheduled to burn hand piles and smoke may be visible.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. KTVN will host its annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive this Friday, Dec. 11 with food drop-off locations in Carson City, Minden and Reno beginning at 6 a.m. and running until 6 p.m.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is looking for adults interested in volunteering to assist leading snowshoe trips.

The department is hoping to offer at least a couple trips each month while there is snow on the ground.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is working with a third-party consultant to develop a master plan for the Fuji Park/Fairgrounds and is seeking information on the current use of the facilities as well as ideas on how the facilities can improve to better accommodate the community.

During the Thursday meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a $125,000 settlement demand was approved by the Board in regards to the alleged molestation of a five-year-old child who was, at the time, enrolled at Camp Carson.

Wildland fire officials have lifted fire restrictions across much of Nevada’s public lands. The Bureau of Land Management, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and Nevada Division of Forestry have rescinded the current 2020 Nevada-wide fire restrictions as of Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020.

The sunset hike hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space that was set to occur up Prison Hill on Saturday, Nov. 14 has been cancelled.

Carson Ridge Disc Golf Course work day on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. Meet at the course parking lot at Flint Drive and Rifle Range Road. There will be planned tasks for different levels of physical ability. All volunteers will receive a Carson Ridge Shield Decal.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department opened three new segments of trail following an Oct. 30 ribbon cutting. These fun new trails are part of a network of non-motorized paths that connect residents with almost 5,000 acres of Carson City Parks and Open Space within the Carson River/Prison Hill area. Future plans include completing a multi-use path around Prison Hill.
