I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: July 28 - 29

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Bet your bottom dollar that Aileen Quinn, the title actress of the 1982 musical ‘Annie,’ and her band ‘The Leapin’ Lizards’ can get you on the dance floor. Read on for all this weekend’s fun.

  • Muscle Powered Day Hike: Tahoe Rim Trail, North from Spooner Summit to the saddle of Snow Valley Peak - Meet at the Hwy 50 Park-and-ride, west of Hwy 395, at 7:30am (We will cancel if it rains or is too smoky on the morning of the hike; plan on approximately six hours for the hike once we have arrived at the trailhead; a strenuous hike for experienced, fit hikers only - this is an 11-mile round-trip hike to Snow Valley Peak saddle on the Tahoe Rim Trail. The hike will be quite an uphill climb going out and downhill coming back; bring at least 2 quarts of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and snacks; Hats, hiking poles, and sunscreen recommended; Dogs welcome but must be under owner's control.   • Karson Kruzers 33rd annual Run What-Cha-Brung Car Show at Mills Park (8am-4pm Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, Raffles, silent auction, games and music; Registration 8am-10am, $45; open to all running cars, no matter make/model/year – several vehicle classes)
  • — Rummage Sale in the Veterans Memorial Hall: corner of Curry/Second Streets (8am-4pm; sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 4 to benefit local veterans)
  • Dayton Pigs Desert Cleanup – Meet in front of Calvary Chapel Church on Enterprise Way in Dayton (8am-10am; From there, we will be hitting the trails, clearing out couches, appliances, etc; Bring a truck/trailer, work gloves, and water - First aid kit, eye protection, dust mask, rake, and shovel recommended, and don't wear your favorite shoes; Trash cans, extra trash bags, and shovels are always welcome - If you bring an empty trailer and get it loaded, we'll cover the dump fees; Dayton Pigs is a community effort to rid our beautiful wild spaces of trash left behind from out-of-control illegal dumping)

  • — Edwards Motor Car Rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (Museum open 9am-4:30pm, admission for adults is $6, children under 18 are free; Motor Car Rides available from 10am-4pm and last approximately 35 minutes – Fares are $4 for ages 12 and over; $2 for museum members and ages 4-11, and free for ages 3 and under - Motor car No. 401 was built by the Edwards Motor Car Co. of Sanford, NC and put into service October 1926 by the Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend Railroad of Ajo, AZ. A few times each year, the Virginia and Truckee runs its Diesel Engine on the round-trip ride to Virginia City. It’s not as expensive as the Steam Engine ride, so if you’ve been wanting to see the canyon, this might be an option.

Sunday is a little quiet in Carson City this week. The Carson City Fair is winding down and will close by 4 p.m. If you had your eye on any of the silent auction items, you’ll want to beat the noon deadline for bids. The tiny hamlet of Silver City hosts a concert in the park this evening with the young, but very talented, Mylo McCormick. St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church in Carson City is having a huge rummage sale Saturday, April 27 at 8 am until 1:30 pm. This is a fundraiser by St. Paul's women's group, WELCA, in association with Thrivent. There will be a jewelry room and a boutique featuring decor de jour and collectibles.

Carson City area casino gaming revenue was up slightly in March, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Statewide, revenue was down 1.65 percent compared to March 2023.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Empire Elementary School’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Teacher Adrienne Wiggins has been selected as a Nevada finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honors for teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.
