CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is celebrating 100 years with historical photos and timeline posted on the Department’s website, as well as an invitation for Nevadans to share their state transportation memories.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters rescue two dogs from icy river

South Lake Tahoe firefighters rescued two dogs that fell through the ice along the Truckee River on Saturday. The incident happened near Venice Drive where the river meets the lake after the fire agency received a dispatch call about two dogs in the icy water.

NDOT inspects Carson Valley area bridges

On Wednesday, underwater bridge inspectors hired by the Nevada Department of Transportation inspected 12 bridges in the Carson Valley, Minden and Gardnerville areas to evaluate for any potential flood-related bridge damage.

Fill it Up: Lake Tahoe now 1.67 feet above natural rim, highest January since 2013

Lake Tahoe is filling up and is currently holding the most water for the month of January since 2013, according to BLM and USGS hydrology reports.

What Works: Preparedness vs. Complacency

The recent flooding was devastating for some, inconvenient for others. What was the difference? Of course, flood zoning played a large role. But even those in flood areas were better off because of a single mindset, preparedness.
I was personally impressed by the local response.

The Nevada Department of Transportation recently installed their first Butts Only Box receptacles to collect cigarette waste at four rest areas on the I-80 freeway. Cigarettes are the number one littered item in the world, installing these receptacles will help protect the historical waters of the Truckee River for generations to come.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 24-30, 2016. This is the final week of work on the Downtown Corridor Improvement Project along Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Carson Street will be one lane in each direction with lane shifts through the week during daytime hours.

— Sunday night through Wednesday night starting at 8 p.m., there will be lane shifts for final striping.

— At this time, all side streets should be open.

Lake Tahoe fills by more than 3 inches thanks to weekend storms

With more than a foot of rain near Alpine Meadows, and six inches or more in areas throughout the Tahoe Basin this weekend, the end result is more than a 3-inch rise in Lake Tahoe thanks to the wet atmospheric river storms.

Obama addresses conservation and climate change at Lake Tahoe Summit

President Barack Obama was cheered enthusiastically Wednesday at the 20th Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual gathering of federal and state leaders from California and Nevada who are dedicated to protecting the Sierra's crown jewel.

"I've never been here," President Obama told the crowd Wednesday at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in Stateline. "Its not that I didn't want to come, but nobody invited me."

The President quipped he's sure to return, "though my transportation won't be as nice."

Nevada Humane Society Pet Files: Whose rubber duck will win the grand prize?

If you follow anything about us you know that right now is duck season. Not real ducks, but little, bright yellow, rubber ducks. 30,000 of them to be exact. Recently, they descended upon Reno and are now completing Duckie Boot Camp as they train for the big day — when they race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

Slower snowmelt affects agriculture, drinking water availability in western mountains

Western communities are facing effects of a warming climate with slower and earlier snowmelt reducing streamflows and possibly the amount of water reaching reservoirs used for drinking water and agriculture, according to a study published in July.

The Fourth of July holiday period is the busiest time of year in the Lake Tahoe Basin. For those visiting during the holiday and attending one of the firework displays over the lake, expect extremely crowded conditions and excess traffic.

Hello fellow anglers. We have had two successful kids fishing derbys in our area. The Lampe Park Kids Derby had 1,300 children attend this year and last Saturday was the Alpine County Kids Fishing derby at Indian Creek.

My hat is off to all the volunteers that came together to make this such a successful and fun event. Now it is time for the kids to take dad fishing. Father's Day is this Sunday and what better way to give back than to take your dad fishing. These events are the reason that most kids get hooked on fishing.
