St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City Gets Solar Array

St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center's new solar array built by Black Rock Solar

From the front, St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center is the epitome of Virginia City’s Old West heritage. But take a peak around back and you’ll find an energy source that’s anything but old-fashioned.

Reno nonprofit Black Rock Solar just completed construction of a 110-panel ground-mount photovoltaic array at the National Historic Landmark, built in 1875. The 30-kW array will generate enough energy to cover almost all the electricity costs of the former Comstock hospital.

Hello fellow anglers. There is less than four days to go before the California fishing season officially opens. When the sun comes up on April 26, 2014 there will be a lot of casting going on.

I urge every angler who has purchased a sport fishing license to also pick up a copy of the fishing regulations. The game wardens will be out checking to make sure that we all follow the regulations.

Debating state of our state song

If you live in Reno and are over 80, you may think "Home Means Nevada" is a stirring song.

But many people in the rest of Nevada, especially in Southern Nevada — with three-fourths of the state's population — never have seen the Truckee River, which runs from Lake Tahoe down through Reno. And unless the dictionary is your favorite book, you won't know a rill from a thrill.

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can easily run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River which begins at Lake Tahoe.
