Doug 'Mack the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe area fishing report

Hello fellow anglers. Well here we are only two weeks away from the California opening day fishing season. This when most lakes, rivers and streams open for the year, and some rivers change limit and tackle regulations.
Check your regulations before you go fishing to know these changes.

For example, all the rivers and streams leading into Lake Tahoe do not open until July 1, 2014. These include Trout Creek, Taylor Creek, and the Upper Truckee river all located on the south end of Lake Tahoe. It's cheaper to pick up a free regulation book then to be educated by the game warden.
In my last article I told you of a couple surprises in Alpine County.

First up, I would like to welcome David and Marilyn Nickerson to the Carson River Resort. The Nickerson's are the new managers of the resort. I had the pleasure of meeting them last week. They are real down to earth customer service oriented country folk.

Second up, there is a new restaurant and tackle shop opening up on April 24. They are located on highway 89, just a couple miles up from the intersection of 88 and 89 in Woodfords Calif. The site of the old burger place and gas station.  
New owners Tony and Dayne are calling the place, Todds Bait and Tackle.  

They will have a full fishing tackle shop and will serve Burgers, chili dogs and hot dogs. There will be dining inside with seven tables as well as four tables outside to enjoy your meal, or just get something to go.

 For those inquiring minds. Todd Sondero has not moved The original Todds bait and Tackle from Markleeville and is not an owner of the new shop. But will be working at both locations. So now you have a place to get lunch on your way up to the Carson River Resort on opening day.

LAKE TAHOE:  
As many might have seen last week's photo of Gene St Denis.  You know fishing for mackinaw has been very good. Last week Gene caught a 29 lb, a 21 lb and an 18 lb mackinaw trolling a rainbow pattern Trophy Stick lure. Also noted is that Gene lost a mackinaw right at the boat that would have competed for the lake record.

I also heard from a few other anglers that have similar luck in the same area. Anglers have been top lining from Cave Rock to Logan Shoals in 40 to 60 feet of water with stick baits.  Reason for this great fishing may be due to NDOW planted Cave Rock with a few thousand rainbow trout about a week ago.

CAPLES LAKE:
The lake still has ice on it and is thawing out with our warmer day time temperatures. Dave reported some anglers still out ice fishing. With 60 degree temperatures the lake should thaw out by early to mid May. The resort is scheduled to open towards the end of May or first of June. BLUE LAKES-BURNSIDE LAKE-WOLF CREEK:  
As of today were still closed and not schedule to open by Saturday April 26th. I will keep you informed.


CARSON RIVERS CALIFORNIA:
Closed to fishing until April 26 2014. Both the east and west fork were planted by CDFG with catchable rainbow trout this week. The Alpine County Fish and Game will be planting the week of opening day.
INDIAN CREEK RES:
The water level has dropped a little. The access road to the dam area is accessible now. Many anglers have been doing very good. Renee and I fished last week for an hour and a half and caught and released many fish in the 10 to 13 inch class.

Lew Souder and Fred Jones fished last week and were very successful throwing various colored spoons.
The campground is scheduled to open on May 1.  

The lake was planted recently with rainbow trout in the  1/2 to 2 pound class.


TOPAZ LAKE:
Water level is still too low to launch boats from the marina or the Douglas park area. Many anglers with small boats have been shore launching. I have not received and reports from to lodge on the derby. The derby drawing will be held April 13th at 7pm in the casino. Must be present to win.


MITCH POND:
In the Gardnerville Ranchos was planted with 1 lb and bigger fish this week. they were supplied by O Banion Fish hatchery in Smith Valley. Fishing has been good for bait and lure anglers.


NDOW FISH PLANTS:
Wilson Common pond, Baily Pond, Carson River in Douglas and Lyon Counties, walker River east fork, Lake Tahoe.
