Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, I would like to say to all the firefighters on the Washington fire, Thank you for saving Markleeville and the outlying community of Alpine County.

On Sunday I took a drive up to the Wolf Creek area. The fire hit and missed all along the east fork of the Carson River. Most of the river area was untouched by the fire, although there were a few areas that had burned down to the river's edge.

The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Music, food, and more from Carson Mall to Williams Street. Have a great time, and be safe.

Outdoors with Don Q: California fishing season begins Saturday

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

While Lake Tahoe clarity results are positive, new challenges loom

The University of California, Davis and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency recently released their yearly water clarity readings for Lake Tahoe. The good news: Mid-lake water clarity improved significantly in 2014, with an average reading of 77.8 feet. That’s 7.5 feet greater than the average reading for 2013, and almost 14 feet greater than the 64.1 feet measured in 1997, Lake Tahoe’s lowest recorded clarity.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report for early April

Hello fellow anglers, I am counting the days to the California opening fishing season. On April 25, 2015 most of California lakes, streams and rivers will open for fishing. Always check your regulation book for every body of water you fish. Regulations can change and some waters do not open until later in the season.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lake and river outlook is grim for the rest of the year

We are into the first part of the month of April, winter is behind us, and the outlook is grim for the rest of the year due to our prolonged drought. Here are some things that are currently occurring and will probably occur:

Snow: Our Sierra Nevada snowpack is either non-existent or minimal at best. There are very few snowdrifts across higher elevation hiking trails. Deep snowfields and snowdrifts in the mountains are things of the past. The peaks are bare rather than smooth white with lots of snow.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of April 8, 2015 and beyond. Opening day for fishing on most California waters is Saturday, April 25.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California this first week of April, 2015. Opening Day for California fishing is April 25.

Drought: Sierra snowpack 'worst in a century'

The traditional snow season ends April 1 with what appears to be the most dismal mountain snowpack on record, cementing 2015's status as the fourth drought year in a row and setting the stage for a difficult summer.

The Lake Tahoe Basin's snowpack Tuesday was only 3 percent of normal for the date and the Truckee River Basin's was measured at 14 percent, far worse than the end-of-season numbers for any of the previous three drought years in a situation that's one for the record books.
