Prayer session at Nevada Legislative Building Thursday to recognize National Day of Prayer

The Legislative Building in Carson City will have a prayer session at 7:30a.m. for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7, 2015. The public is invited in addition to the traditional prayer meeting on the Capitol Steps at 11:00 am., which is hosted by the Carson City Christian Ministerial Fellowship.

Carson City Salvation Army hosts May 5 Job Fair

The Salvation Army in Carson City is looking for energetic men and women to fill summer seasonal positions. It will host a May 5 job fair from 2 to 4 p.m. at 661 Colorado Street in Carson City.

This is an opportunity to meet the staff and interview for the summer positions. Job seekers should be prepared to fill out an application and interview with our Corps staff. Please bring valid proof that you can legally work in the U.S. must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid Nevada Driver’s License.

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.

Cooperative Extension: Green Giving the Greenhouse Project way

One of my dreams in my professional life was to introduce young people to the viability of a great career in horticulture. I have been fortunate to realize that goal through my involvement with The Greenhouse Project. However, awakening the passion for growing and working with plants in youth is only one wonderful aspect of this project. I also get to work with caring dedicated people, help beautify downtown Carson City and, best of all, help feed those in need.

Cheeseheads win Salvation Army Red Kettle challenge

Carson City fans of the Green Bay Packers won a challenge against San Francisco 49ers fans Monday as Salvation Army bell ringers rang their bells at a Red Kettle Ring Off.

The Packers fans raised $226.51 and the 49ers fans raised $143.34. The protest kettles for “Any other Team” raised $14.25. The challenge took place at the Wal-Mart on Topsy Lane from 4 to 6 p.m.

Salvation Army Red Kettle challenge Monday brings out 49er, Packer fan bell ringers

The Salvation Army Red Kettles at Walmart on Topsy Lane will have a challenge between the Green Bay Packer’s fans and San Francisco 49ers fans Monday, Dec. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. The Packers fans will be “bell ringing” at the grocery entrance and the 49er fans will be “bell ringing” at the household entrance.

The Salvation Army is not taking sides on this challenge, but is excited to see some of the local NFL fans come out and help them serve the community.

Christmas strings program today at Carson Mall

Looking for some holiday music magic today before heading home for the weekend? Inside the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street, from 4 to 5 p.m. is the six annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings. The event is free and open to everyone and is well worth it to see the performers.

Salvation Army recruits dog scout bell ringer for Saturday kettle campaign

The Salvation Army has some unique bell ringers out at Smith’s in Gardnerville this Saturday. Dog Scouts of America’s Nevada Chapter will be ringing bells with a little help from some K9 friends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dog Scout Trace, the black lab, from the video below will be bell ringing. Trace is a scout in Dog Scouts of America. DSA is a program similar to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts only for dogs. Dogs can earn badges for different service projects that they are involved in. Trace can earn a badge for his service project as a bell ringer.

Rotary Club of Carson City shops for 25 families

The Rotary Club of Carson City adopted 25 families from The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program this past Saturday December 13th. Each year for more than twenty years the Rotary Club of Carson City has been adopting families for Christmas as a mentoring program.

Kiwanis Club of Carson City, Supervisor Shirk volunteer for Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign

The Salvation Army is in the middle of their Red Kettle Fundraising season and is very thankful for the faithful volunteers of the Kiwanis Club of Carson City who have been standing a kettle for the Army for more years than either organization can remember.

The Kiwanis volunteers will be out at Smith’s at 599 E. Williams St. every Saturday leading up to Christmas this year. In 2013 they raised $1567.46 for the Army with their Bell Ringing.

Feed Nevada Day is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Mike’s Pharmacy in Carson City. Mike’s Pharmacy and News Talk 780 KOH will be collecting frozen turkeys to fill Salvation Army holiday food baskets for families in need in the Carson City, Douglas County, Tahoe area. It's Your City: Mike's Pharmacy hosts 16th Annual Turkey Round-Up this Wednesday

This week's It's Your City features Mike Hautekeet, owner of Mike's Pharmacy, and Mike's daughter, Monique. They discuss the 16th Annual Turkey Round-Up that will be held this Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Carson City.

Turkeys collected will go to help food banks in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties. Bring turkeys and non-perishabe food to Mike's Pharmacy, 1007 North Curry Street. The turkeys and other food collected will be distributed by the Carson City Salvation Army. Last year the roundup helped more than 3,000 families. Watch the video for details.

Senator Square: Carson High celebrates 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend

Carson High’s 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair is Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 8p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be the best one yet with lots of new vendors as well as all your favorites. Come spend some time – great food, entertainment, a raffle, Santa, book sale, and of course, amazing and unique gifts for everyone. Salvation Army to hold Carson City area job fair Tuesday

The Salvation Army will host a job fair Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 10 to noon in Carson City. The service agency will be hiring seasonal workers to help with their holiday programs such as Thanksgiving food drives, Christmas food drives and Angel Tree Christmas Toy distribution.

Two drivers, and several kettle workers are needed. Bring a resume, identification and references (current DMV print out for drivers) Tuesday and be prepared to be interviewed on the spot. The job fair will be held at the Carson City Salvation Army, 661 Colorado St.

Local churches unite for worship event tonight in Carson City

Several local churches will be uniting together tonight to worship and pray for Carson City. The event, called "Engage" begins at 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, August 29, at the Carson City Community Center.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and several local ministries will be on hand to share the work that is being done in our community. This is the third Engage event in Carson City and momentum has continued to grow with each event.

Nearly 500 back packs collected in Carson City Salvation Army Drive

The Salvation Army of Carson City is thankful to the community for their generous support of the back to school Apple Tree program. During the drive, 467 back packs as well as school supplies were collected and will be distributed to needy children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District.

Salvation Army Apple Tree Back Pack and School Supplies Drive underway

The Salvation Army of Carson City is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for underprivileged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

Similar to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree program the Army has started an Apple Tree program with “Apples” that have a child’s wishes on it to help donors shop.

Carson City Library, Salvation Army lead 'back to school supply drive'

The Carson City Library has joined the Salvation Army’s Carson City Corps Community Center in preparing students for the upcoming school year. The Back-To-School supply drive will run through August 11. A collection barrel and Apple Tree Poster is located at the library’s main Help Desk.
