On this week's It's Your City, Camille Jones, manager of the Carson City Greenhouse Project discusses spring and summer activities at the facility, located behind Carson High School.

I received an e-mail that asked why the non-profit Greenhouse Project (TGP) could sell mushrooms to Adele's Cafe (Adele's Facebook posting March 22nd). Supervisor Abowd is founder and president of TGP and co-owner with her husband Charlie of Adele's Cafe. The e-mail question and response follow.

JOIN's FREE workshops are the last week of every month. The Carson City Rainbow Girls announce their Spring Strut 5K race. Join us at Riverview Park on the first Saturday morning of spring, March 22 at 7 a.m. All runners get a t-shirt and in addition there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers for men and women. All children will get a free Kids Meal at Buffalo Wild Wings.

The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 run for free with a paid adult. You can register online at Active.com or the day of the race.

Last week the Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® joined together to collect toys for the Salvation Army's "Toys for Joy" program.

The Salvation Army of Carson City serves all of Carson City and Douglas County. The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® is a professional organization supporting REALTORS® in the Sierra Nevada region, including the counties of Carson City, Douglas, Churchill and Lyon (except for Fernley).

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Christmas program will benefit from the first annual Battle of the Bars Toy Drive. Carson City area bars and taverns have been collecting toys since late November and will push for a final count this Sunday, Dec. 15, 6 p.m.

The Salvation Army officials will be “Bar Hopping” this Sunday afternoon and evening picking up toys and thanking everyone for their support of this Toy Drive.

The Salvation Army of Carson City is just one and a half weeks into its annual Red Kettle fundraiser and is 35 percent short from what it collected in 2012. The news comes at a time when more than 1,000 Carson City area children have registered for Christmas day food and toys directed through the nonprofit organization.

The Salvation Army relies on money raised in the red kettles — in coins, dollars and checks (and the occasional diamond ring or gold tooth) to serve more than 17,000 individuals in Carson City, Dayton and Douglas County each year, said Lt. Mark Cyr.

Continuing its 122-year national tradition, Salvation Army of Carson City launched its Red Kettle fundraising campaign Monday with bells ringing at 15 local retailers, said Carson City Corps Lt. Mark Cyr. Another 10 sites will be added by the end of this week to make a total of 25 Red Kettle bell ringers.

The Salvation Army of Carson City is in need of turkeys for needy families. Each year hundreds of families without enough money rely on the Salvation Army for their holiday dinner.

Agencies such as FISH, Ron Wood, Douglas County Food Bank, Tahoe Community Food Bank, and Washoe Valley Food Bank also receive turkeys from the Salvation Army to help with clients in need. This has been made possible for the past 14 years by Mike’s Pharmacy of Carson City who has planned their 15th annual Turkey Round Up this coming Friday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Who doesn't smile, nod at the bell ringer and put some extra change in the Salvation Army kettle over the holiday season?

It takes a lot of people to see through the annual campaign. The Salvation Army in Carson City will hold a job fair Friday and is looking for kettle workers, an office assistant and drivers to help with the holiday season. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army, 661 Colorado Street.

Three Carson City bars will hold a turkey drop this Saturday for the Salvation Army. Anyone who wishes to donate a turkey can take them between 4 and 8 p.m. to:

Chefs Charlie Abowd and Mark Estee join forces for a second time, creating a menu for the fourth annual Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner that will outshine every past event. This year’s event takes place Monday, Nov. 11 in Carson City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The women’s organization from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and women from the Salvation Army, joined their efforts to assemble personal care kits for those in need.



“Our goal is to build 100 care kits and deliver them to the Dew-drop Inn, the Salvation Army, and the F.I.S.H. organizations here in Carson City,” said Caresse Williams, Humanitarian Specialist for the Latter-day Saints and organizer of the event. 



Zombie apocalypse hits Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 19 with "Zombies Run for Your Life" a 5K fun-run, food and toy drive with proceeds to benefit the Salvation Army and F.I.S.H. in helping them get a jump start to their holiday season.

The run will be at Riverview Park in Carson City at end of 5th Street and Marsh Road. The run starts at 10 a.m. and costs $30 up to the day before the race, then $40 the day of the race.

Grants amounting to $4.5 million from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will go to four Nevada service organizations that assist veterans in the Silver State, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.

U.S. Vets, Vietnam Veterans of California, The Salvation Army, and HELP Social Service organization, each have received grants totaling $4.5 million through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program. This program supports VA’s efforts to prevent at-risk veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those who have recently fallen into homelessness.

Whether you're looking to haul junk from the basement to the landfill, are a senior and need help getting rid of debris, or maybe you need to get rid of old cans of paint, Carson City has several programs available.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies made numerous felony arrests over the weekend, mostly on drug and assault offenses. One arrest was for witness intimidation and threats allegedly made by an inmate in the city's jail, while another arrest was made after a man reportedly threw a wrench at a Jeep, smashing the window, while a 2-year-old was inside.

Some Carson City firefighters traded in their fireman hats for Santa caps today to help out area children in need. The Carson City Firefighters Association went on a shopping spree at Walmart to buy toys for the Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program.

Being the capital city of Nevada, Carson City once again shines brighter and bucks the rest, turning the lights on Friday to not one but two Christmas trees during the kick-off of the two-day Snowflake Festival of Lights.

Perched on the State Capital steps, some 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Singing Ensemble sang Christmas carols to a crowd of hundreds (if not thousands) of parents, siblings, dignitaries, retirees, state workers and locals who swelled onto Carson Street in good measure.

Carson City's annual Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has become so well received over the years that the 2012 festival will now run for two days. The enhanced event is tonight, Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ice skating continues until 10 p.m.

Tonight's night's festivities begin on the capitol grounds with the state tree, a bristlecone pine, and downtown Carson City being lit along with a procession including Santa, Mrs. Claus and the 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble.

Carson City Chamber of Commerce members filled two barrels of toys to overflowing at the recent Chamber Breakfast Club hosted by the Salvation Army.

Capital City Reads: A Thousand Splendid Suns

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-The Carson City Library would like to invite the entire community to participate in a citywide reading initiative to discuss the timely, and powerful message found in Khaled Hosseini’s best seller, A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The Salvation Army of Carson City is raising money for over sea mission work. Lt. Leslie Cyr will be painting during each Sunday Morning Celebration Service and each painting will be sold through a silent auction from now through Easter Sunday.

Greater Nevada Credit Union invites the public to drop off non-perishable food items during “Make a Difference Day” on Saturday, October 22 from 10 am to 2 pm at the credit union’s Eagle Station branch. All donated food will go to the Carson City Salvation Army to help local residents in need.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the National Association of Town Watch will co-sponsor the 28th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at Mills Park.
The theme for this year is “101 Days of Crime Prevention and Safety” which was envisioned by Sheriff Ken Furlong to promote safety throughout the summer which continues well after National Night Out. Festivities run from 5 to to 8 p.m.

Carson City Firefighters will be at the WalMart on College Parkway at 9 a.m. Friday morning to shop for toys for needy children. The firefighters are donating $4,000 to buy the toys, which will be distributed to local children through the Salvation Army. Those who show up on Friday can help with the shopping or make donations.
