Prayer session at Nevada Legislative Building Thursday to recognize National Day of Prayer

Event Date:
May 7, 2015 - 7:30am

The Legislative Building in Carson City will have a prayer session at 7:30a.m. for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7, 2015. The public is invited in addition to the traditional prayer meeting on the Capitol Steps at 11:00 am., which is hosted by the Carson City Christian Ministerial Fellowship.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will be held at 12 p.m.

The new, one hour prayer session will be from 7:30 a.m. through 8:30 a.m. in Room 3100 at 401 South Carson Street. Several local leaders will lead our prayers for the Nation and our State, including: Secretary of State, Barbara Cegavske; State Senator, Don Gustavson; Pastor Pat Propster, Calvary Chapel of Carson; Father Chuck Durante, St. Theresa of Avila; Pastor Ben Fleming, Silver Hills Community; Lt. Mark Cyr, Salvation Army, and Pastor Nick Emery, Good Shepherd Wesleyan Church.

Room 3100 is on the third floor of the Legislative Building on the far West side of the building. It faces Carson Street. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and the service will start at 7:30 a.m. The public is invited to all three celebrations for the Day.

Two Las Vegas Metro police officers shot and killed in an ambush while eating lunch at a pizza restaurant June 8, 2014 will be honored in a memorial, also on Thursday, May 7, at the 18th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony held on the Capitol grounds in Carson City.

The service will honor Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo, among the 128 Nevada Peace Officers that have been killed in the line of duty. In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.

The two Las Vegas officers were shot and killed in the ambush while dining in the 300 block of North Nellis Boulevard. Two subjects, a male and a female, approached them at their table and shot them execution style without warning. The subjects then stole both officers' weapons and ammunition and ran to a nearby Walmart, where they shot and killed a civilian.

The service will begin with the presentation of colors by the combined Nevada Law Enforcement Honor Guard and the delivery of a runner’s memorial baton. The baton is being relayed by Nevada peace officers from Las Vegas to Carson City.

The Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run began Thursday, April 30. The first officer killed in the line of duty was Carson County Nevada Territory Sheriff John L. Blackburn who was killed in 1861 while making an arrest.
