Open studio tour, drive-in movie, dancing and more highlight weekend activities in Carson City region

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The 2020 Jazz & Beyond Music and Art Festival will include the second annual Carson City Open Studios Tour with multiple locations. Hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, the Brewery Arts Center is holding a drive-in movie showing of the 1950s classic “Shane” on Saturday. Special medallion to be minted Saturday in Carson City

Special medallions commemorating the historical Coach 17 train car will be minted on Coin Press No. 1 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

Bob Cashell, the former longtime mayor of Reno and Nevada lieutenant governor known for his big personality, died on Tuesday. He was 81.

Jim Bauserman, a family friend, confirmed the news to The Nevada Independent. Community leaders, including current Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, offered tributes on Tuesday.

Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. Combined with championship football festivities on Sunday, the Silver State is in store for a wild, good time.
