As of Saturday, I am retiring as the Outdoor Editor for Carson Now and a very special outdoor photographer (my wife Elaine) will also be retiring.
It's been a great run, full of great memories, but sooner or later all good things must come to an end, and Oct. 31 is that special time for the two of us.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold a series of statewide town hall meetings from Nov. 2-6 to learn what residents think is and isn't working with Nevada’s hunting seasons and game management.

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Oct. 7, 2015 and beyond.

UPDATE: Carson Tahoe Health has released the following statement regarding Steve Foley, a Registered Nurse, who died from an accidental gunshot during a hunting trip:

"Carson Tahoe Health is devastated by the untimely, accidental death of Steve Foley, RN. Steve was a much loved friend and stellar employee who worked with us for about 15 years, the last five years in the regional medical center Cath Lab. Our hearts are grieving with this tragic loss and he will be sorely missed. Our sympathies and prayers go out to Steve's family and friends during this time of unimaginable suffering."

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko County sheriff's officials say a Carson City man is dead after being accidentally shot by his friend on a hunting trip.

Hello Carson City! It’s great to be back!

Following WNC’s graduation in May, I returned to my hometown of Haines, Alaska. Haines is a small town in southeast Alaska, 90 miles north of Juneau. It is home to 1,713 people year round (1,714 when I’m in town) and swells to 5,000 plus in the summer.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

April showers may bring May flowers, but May showers apparently saved this year’s chukar hunting season. This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that uses data from aerial surveys that take place across 13 different survey plots, was recently released.

Jon Sjӧberg is one of those people who comes into work and gives his best effort day in and day out. He is passionate about his job and takes his responsibility as the Fisheries Division Administrator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife very seriously. It’s been the same story for more than 35 years.

A Las Vegas man pled guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of killing an antelope illegally in Lander County on July 21 and was sentenced to three years of probation, a year of jail time (suspended), fined more than $4500 in civil and criminal penalties and forfeited a .300 caliber Winchester rifle used in the crime.

After the Friday wind and rain, we are supposed to see some clear skies: but don’t quote me on that. You know how the weather here can be. The Third and Curry Farmers Market vendors are tough, though, so your weekly dose of fresh produce will be waiting for you either way. Don’t miss the autumn plant sale at the Greenhouse Project booth. The Carson City Historical Society hosts their second yard sale of the season at the historic Forman-Roberts House on North Carson Street, so have fun treasure hunting.

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

Several weeks ago, I wrote an article about how Elaine and I tried a new way to keep the mule deer from eating her flowers and vegetables. We live in a small, comfortable home (circa late 1940's) in a quiet neighborhood on the older west side of Carson City.

If you failed to draw a tag in the main draw or even if you drew a tag but would still love the chance to go on a desert bighorn or bull elk hunt, the Nevada Dream Tag may be just what you’re looking for.

The Nevada Dream Tag Program is a raffle that allows resident and nonresident sportsmen a chance at the hunt of a lifetime while also contributing to Nevada’s wildlife habitat. The tags are similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a lifetime” tags.

The Nevada Waterfowl Association has selected the Bufflehead as the species for this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest. The contest is sanctioned by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, with the winning artwork to be featured on the 2016-2017 state stamp.

Applications are being sought by the Carson City Board of Supervisors for volunteer positions on the Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife and the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

Rattlesnakes have already been active for months due to the mild winter and low precipitation, fostering an earlier and longer snake season. If you enjoy activities that take you and your dogs outdoors, you and your pets may be at risk for encountering rattlesnakes.

It’s now official. Systems Consultants, the private computer firm in Fallon that conducts the annual computerized drawings for Nevada’s big game hunting tags, has posted the results of the 2015 drawings at its website huntnevada.com for the entire world to see.

I’m not going to tell you what to do, but if you’ll accept a suggestion, find yourself a hamburger. It’s National Hamburger Day during National Hamburger Month, so you might as well celebrate at the Experimental Aircraft Association's weekly burger lunch. If you like random trivia, head over to Alatte Coffee and Wine Bar in the Nugget for their trivia night. Or burn off that burger with some salsa dancing at El Charro Avita or country line dancing at Beercade.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife urges sportsmen and other interested parties to become involved in the big game quota setting process by providing their input at the upcoming Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners meeting in Reno this Friday and Saturday.

Laura Pradere, 13, will go into this weekend’s U.S Bird Dog Western States National Championships with the confidence of one championship already under her belt.
“I’m still kind of nervous,” she said, “but I think having one national title is an advantage.”

She won the youth division of the North American Gun Dog Association championship in Wiggins, Colo., last month. This competition will be in Mound House, just up the road from the Pradere Ranch in Dayton, where her family has lived for five generations.

Nearly every day, Dan Hannum takes one of his three dogs out to practice for chukar hunting competitions. On a recent, unusually warm day in late winter, he loaded up Red. Short for Silverado Always Ready, Red is a 6-year-old English pointer and a three-time national champion.

Just across Highway 50, not far from his Dayton home east of Carson City, Hannum finds a sagebrush-covered slope where he plants a chukar, one of the leftovers from another hunt. When he lets Red out of the truck, the dog takes off running in wide circles.
