During the week of April 20-26, 2015, the Nevada Department of Wildlife in conjunction with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators encourages boaters to Spring Aboard by enrolling in a boating education course.

A member of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone tribe, Mike Williams is dedicated to creating accurate replicas of duck hunting tools in the Numu or Northern Paiute tradition. Williams will demonstrate how he creates tule duck decoys from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 17 in Carson City at the Nevada Legislative Building, in a free SENarts “Work of Artists” event co-sponsored by the Nevada Arts Council and Capital City Arts Initiative.

Nevada game wardens are seeking any tips or information on a poached bull elk found on the south side of the Meadow Creek-Jarbidge road in Hunt Unit 071, 10 miles west of the Diamond A Ranch in northern Elko County.

“The bull was shot through the heart and left to rot only 50 yards from Forest Road 071,” said Jason Jackson, game warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. “We really want to catch the criminal that stole Nevada’s resources by poaching and wasting this animal.”

Usually if you were offered the chance at hunting a premier big game species anywhere in Nevada, you would think that’s a pretty good deal. With the Silver State Tag, however, that’s just the beginning.

The Silver State Tag already allows hunters the opportunity to hunt one of four big game species (mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope) anywhere in the state, but this year the winner could also walk away with thousands of dollars’ worth of hunting gear and services.

Wow, time sure flies when you are having fun.

So fast that I almost forgot about our birthday. I first turned the Carson Now website on back in November 2009, but our official public launch was in March 2010.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife named Jennifer Newmark as Wildlife Diversity Division Administrator. The position oversees the division responsible for Nevada’s diverse wildlife heritage through the protection, management and restoration of non-game species.

Newmark has almost 16 years of experience in increasingly responsible roles working with Nevada’s wildlife. In her most recent position, Jennifer served as the Administrator of the Nevada Natural Heritage Program, an independent state agency within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Western Nevada College found its offense just in time Friday, preventing College of Southern Nevada from taking over first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The Wildcats plated two fifth-inning runs to tie the score and then tallied five runs after two were out in the sixth to pull out a 9-4 baseball victory to gain a doubleheader split at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

If you’re interested in hunting big game in Nevada this year, the Nevada Department of Wildlife wants to remind everyone that the big game tag application process is now open as of Monday, March 23.

Jim Rackley of Winnemucca, Nev. has won the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation award. Rackley’s commitment to Nevada’s wildlife resources was recognized during the March 20, 2015 Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s meeting in Reno, Nevada, where he received the award.

Rackley was nominated for the award by Nevada Muleys a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the conservation of mule deer and their habitats in Nevada. According to the nomination, in 2014 Rackley had a “very impressive record of time and commitment to Nevada’s wildlife.”

Friday night saw the beginning of Spring Fling Week at Carson High School with the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported FBLA’s efforts to raise money for the March of Dimes. The next week is filled with events for student to celebrate springtime.

On Wednesday, March 18, Allen Rowe, owner of Northern Nevada Coin and Bullion will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on a variety of topics related to his involvement in the coin and precious metals profession. RSVP by March 12.
Mr. Rowe has been interested in coins since about the age of ten. Spending paper route money on coins was his favorite pass-time at that age. After graduating high school, he continued his education at the University of Nevada Reno where he earned a degree in medical sciences.

This week, hosts Edwin Lyngar and Teresa Malloy sit down with Nevada Department of Wildlife Fisheries Division Administrator Jon Sjoberg to discuss the Devils Hole Pupfish.
This unique fish lives in only one place on earth and is extremely endangered, and NDOW has a unique perspective and responsibility to save this fish from extinction.


The Nevada Department of Wildlife Fisheries Division has released a proposed plan to restore the sport fisheries in Comins and Bassett Lakes near Ely in White Pine County by removing northern pike. The plan is available for public comment for 30 days beginning March 5, 2015.

Until the mid-2000s Comins Lake was a premier sport fishery for rainbow and brown trout, supporting up to 35,000 angler days per year. The illegal introduction of northern pike in the early 2000s decimated the trout fishery and angler use is now less than 2,000 days per year.

Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens are seeking the public’s assistance with the poaching of a mule deer doe on Broken Arrow Lane in Pleasant Valley, just east of Spring Creek at the base of the Ruby Mountains.

The poaching occurred on Feb. 20, 2015 at approximately 4 p.m. Two males were observed loading a mule deer doe, that had been shot in a residential yard, into a bright or electric blue late model Dodge pickup truck.

If you’re a fisherman or fisherwoman, it’s that time of the year to remind you to purchase your Nevada 2015-2016 fishing license. That new fishing license year begins on Sunday, March 1 and will run through the last day in February, 2016.

This week Nevada Wildlife hosts Edwin Lyngar and Teresa Malloy sit down with Agency Director Tony Wasley and Deputy Director Patrick Cates for an in depth discussion about the Nevada Department of Wildlife and the future of wildlife management and boating in the state. This is a special look at the direction of NDOW.

Some of Northern Nevada's finest traditional, folk and contemporary artists will appear at the 2015 Nevada State Legislature in “The Work of Artists,” a series of interactive talks and demonstrations that bring a personal side to exhibited pieces. Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. All are free and open to the public in Room 3100.

The Ormsby Sportsmen's Association of Carson City has announced that it has disbanded and closed its doors after an existence of almost 70 years, beginning way back in August, 1945.

As I have done for many years, my last article of the year, each year, is to present the Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons. Those reasons include such assorted things as: Outstanding, memorable, good, not so good, questionable, bad, serious, funny, dumb, head-scratching, are-you-kidding, etc.

These awards are presented to all kinds of people or places or things for what has occurred throughout the year.
It’s a fun way to end the year for yours truly.

Best Birthday Present:

On a cold and windy morning in November, 45 men and women took to the hills in the Bodie Hills to plant as many sagebrush seedlings as they could in a two-day span. Besides the cold, the work itself was physically demanding as each seedling had to be planted by hand. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that many of the people on those hills volunteered to be there.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife in conjunction with the Reno community radio station KXNV 89.1 FM announces the launch of a weekly, hour-long radio program designed to take an in-depth look at issues impacting wildlife. The program is also available through podcast statewide at NevadaWild.org.

Time is running and you still can’t figure out what to get that special angler, hunter or outdoor enthusiast for the holidays? If you are still searching for the perfect gift for your sportsman, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has some ideas that might help.

As I look forward to the year of 2015 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2014.
Here are my top memories of this year, ranging all the way from right here in our very own Carson City to two islands in faraway Hawaii.

A new South Lake Tahoe couple brought along a little something special on their recent home search — a camera crew, an HGTV House Hunters crew, to be exact.

Travis and Morgan Fields were working with Chase International’s Angie Clark last spring when the Oakland couple decided to contact the popular show. Angie, already a huge fan, was immediately on board. The trio completed questionnaires and sent in audition tapes.

The Ted C. Frantz Employee of the Year Award is acknowledged as the pinnacle award for all Nevada Department of Wildlife employees. The honor is to recognize significant achievements during the previous year toward the mission of the agency or the conservation, management, enhancement of wildlife in Nevada that are clearly above and beyond his or her normal duties.

Surrounded by small flags, empty gun shells, pioneer headstones and a poignant hand written card from an old girlfriend, where she wrote to him "it had been over forty years, I finally found you" is the grave marker of a Carson City Vietnam veteran, Sgt. Daniel Ackerman, who died in combat.

His body is buried at the old pioneer Empire Cemetery. His marker is in the southwest corner, high above the Carson River where Danny Ackerman loved to hunt, fish and hike around with his friends.
