Hello fellow anglers! We are just a few days away from the Topaz opener on January 1, 2020 after its closure three months ago to this date.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has planted 51,000 pounds of trout, which is approximately 17,800 individual trout.

As a note, the NDOW planted Eagle Lake, Triploid and the Tahoe strain as well. I would have to say, if you don't catch a fish on opening day. It might be time to look for a new sport. With all the trout in the lake with the additional poundage that has been added, fishing should be pretty good.

Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter will host a game watch Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, as the Oakland Raiders take on the Denver Broncos at 1 p.m. Join us at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., for drink specials and pizza for members, and all-around fun times and friendship.

Heading into Christmas Eve, activities around the capital city are winding down, but the last minute shopping will continue, so prepare for that rush on the roadways and at local stores. It is the last day of the Holiday Craft Show at Carson Mall, so stop on by. There are no planned Muscle Powered fitness events scheduled. Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Last Saturday I was part of the Rotary Club's Shopping Spree. This annual event pairs a Rotarian with a needy child in hopes of purchasing gifts for the child and members of his/her family.

The young man that I accompanied was a rather precocious and talkative eight-year old who was a bit jaded when it came to acknowledging the magic of Christmas. However, during the shopping part of the activity, my new young friend became very animated and hopeful as he talked about selecting gifts for his family and for himself.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a toy and gift drive for homeless kids and teens, the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong for Strings at the Carson Mall, Carson City’s first-ever "Unsilent Night" at the Brewery Arts Center, a Só Sol dinner with entertainment at Sassafras, a "Pink Party" cancer center fundraiser at the Lighthouse Bar, comedian Dan St. Paul at the Carson Comedy Club and more.

RENO — Reno-Tahoe International Airport anticipates more than 15,000 passengers will arrive and depart daily from the airport during the peak travel times leading up to Christmas and New Year's. The airport advises passengers to arrive early and allow time for parking, airline check-in and long TSA security lines.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

CARSON CITY — Empire Elementary School hosted the second of four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Parent Nights Tuesday, Dec. 17. More than 250 participants gathered last night to experience fun hands-on experiments and student-showcased STEM projects, which were taught throughout the last quarter of activities and learning.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

Join the Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City Chapter this Wednesday, Dec. 18 for its Holiday Lunch Connect at Red's Old 395 Grill.

The countdown to Christmas is on as we head into the first day of the work week. Events around the capital city Monday include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, the first day kickoff of a Holiday Gift Making Camp at the Brewery Arts Center, a Carson River Trails Project open house hosted by Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a Carson City Democratic luncheon featuring a Bernie Sanders campaign presentation, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more.

It’s a holly, jolly Christmas! Cherie Shipley and Lake Tahoe Entertainment present the 18th Annual Community Holiday Show "Joyful Noise" this Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls will hold their Annual Christmas Gift Wrap Fundraiser at the Carson Mall in Carson City Dec. 14-24.

You can bring your gifts to the Mall and the Rainbow Girls will wrap them with love and care. This is the Rainbow Girls' yearly fundraiser and an appropriate donation for the size and amount of gifts is requested.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

This Friday through Sunday, Dec. 13-15, the first Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch, hosted by the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, will be bringing a free family event to the community with some good old-fashioned Christmas charm.

Somebody just discovered black lights and it's your fave retro band! Glow back in time to songs by Cindy Lauper! The B-52's! Madonna! Billy Idol and onward as the ultimate 80's band New Wave Crave returns to Max Casino with an all new neon look. Wear something fluorescent and fun to "pop" along with the band. With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.

Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

CARSON CITY — The holiday season generally doesn’t lack in opportunities for children to have fun, with numerous special events and activities open to all. For children who are battling cancer or those with compromised immune systems, those opportunities aren’t nearly as great.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. In this long life of mine, nothing looms larger in my memory than riding the perfect wave, well, almost nothing. I could have been a Nick Beck if I hadn't fallen off my board. I used to watch Nick and Joey Cabell surf Cannons off the north shore of Kauai, and wish I could surf like that.

In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.
