New Years Eve events in Carson City, and how to stay safe and healthy ringing in 2021

This has been a very hard year for all of us in Carson City, and the world in general. I think we can all agree we're happy to see this one pass by, and are looking forward to welcoming in the New Year. Especially with the knowledge that vaccines are right on the horizon for the public, we only have a little while left before things can return to normal (hopefully).

Celebrating the New Year is important, but staying safe and healthy not only for ourselves but for our neighbors and community members as well, is more important. Bars, restaurants and other entertainment venues are still functioning on a 25 percent maximum basis.

According to Carson City Health and Human Service's Jessica Rapp, it's important now more than ever to keep safe.

"Although we all would love to come together to welcome the new year, COVID-19 cases are on the rise not only in the Quad-County region but in the state and the nation," said Rapp. "To protect ourselves, our communities, and our healthcare system, we need to continue to practice social distancing and taking preventative actions such as wearing a mask, washing your hands often with soap and water, and staying home when you are sick. The safest way to welcome 2021 us to celebrate with those who live in your home or virtually with those who live out of your home. Everyone can make the new year safer by staying home this holiday."

It's important to be reminded that while vaccines are on their way, for the majority of the public, distribution could still be months out.

"There is no timeline or estimated time as to when the public will start receiving their vaccines," said Rapp. "We are following the tiered system set by the state. Currently, CCHHS is working to vaccinate our tier 1 individuals. After we have offered the vaccine to tier 1, we will work with the state to continue through the tiers. Again, we are not sure when we will offer the vaccine to the general public. We will provide updates and more information as it becomes available."

— The Westside Pour House will be serving up food, drinks and fun to celebrate the new year. The Westside Pour House is located at 110 w. Telegraph St.

If you are choosing to celebrate the new year with people outside of your home, it is important to take steps to prevent the spread of not only COVID-19 but other diseases as well, including kissing any strangers at midnight.

"Stay 6 feet apart, wear a mask, wash your hands often, avoid sharing beverages or food, avoid large crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and stay home if you are sick," said Rapp. "It is important to remember that other diseases exist besides COVID-19 and these actions can help prevent the spread of them."

If you're going to celebrate, please don't drink and drive. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. Law enforcement around Carson City and Northern Nevada will be in "saturation" mode throughout the day and into the new year looking for DUI drivers.

Have a happy and safe New Year Carson City!
