Man confesses to shooting self after telling Carson City deputies he had been shot by another
A man who called Carson City Sheriff's Office dispatch Wednesday night saying he had been shot in the stomach by a man wearing dark clothing and a hoodie later confessed that he made the story up.
A 22 caliber handgun was recovered from the passenger seat of the vehicle the man was driving after he told a Carson City sheriff's deputy at Carson Tahoe Hospital that the gunshot wound to his stomach was self inflicted, confirmed Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The incident was reported just after 10:10 p.m. where the man initially told Carson City dispatch that he had been shot by another man who, he said, was wearing a hoodie and dark clothing. The incident was reported in the area of 1959 Eagle Valley Ranch Road near Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.
The man was taken to the hospital by a Carson City sheriff's deputy. Meanwhile, CCSO patrol officers and the Nevada Highway Patrol scoured the area looking for a possible suspect as deputies interviewed the man before he was waiting to board Care Flight where he was eventually flown to a Reno hospital trauma ward due to the gunshot. His condition is unknown at this time.
"Unfortunately, due the man's false reporting, several civilians were confronted by officers who were attempting to locate the suspect," said Furlong. "It wasn't until after several had been stopped that the victim revealed that he had shot himself."
A search for the alleged shooting suspect was called off after the confession and the recovery of the handgun the man said was in the passenger seat of the vehicle he was driving.
