Douglas County sheriff's officer recovering after being shot 3 times, suspects booked in Carson City
A Douglas County Sheriff's Office sergeant is recovering after being shot three times late Sunday in Gardnerville. Two suspects are in custody and are being held in Carson City. The following news release was issued from DCSO:
On Dec. 20, 2020 at approximately 11:15 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies observed Nicholas Berreman who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Kaela Mae Horse-Berreman.
Nicholas Berreman, a known fugitive was wanted for a parole violation out of California Department of Corrections. DCSO Deputies stopped the vehicle Berreman was a passenger in on Gillman Ave and Douglas Ave, in Gardnerville, NV.
Almost immediately, when deputies attempted to arrest Berremen he shot Sgt. John Lenz three times, striking him in the chest and face. Both shots to his chest were stopped by his body armor and one shot was to the left side of his face in his cheek.
Sgt. Lenz was transported by deputies to Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville and then flown via Care Flight to Renown Medical Center, Reno NV where he was treated for his wounds.
Berreman was shot in his right hand. Berreman was transported by East Fork Fire Protection District to Carson Valley Medical Center and treated for his wounds.
Berremen was booked into the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Jail for Battery with Deadly Weapon on Protected Person, Battery with a Deadly Weapon resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm, Possession of Firearm by Prohibited Person, Possession of a Firearm by Intoxicated Person, Discharge of a Firearm in Public and Fugitive from Justice. Horse-Berreman was booked into the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for Harboring/Aiding a Felony Offender.
Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Nevada Division of Investigation are conducting the officer involved shooting investigation per an agreement between Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada Division of Investigation.
Berreman has a lengthy criminal history including Resisting Police Officer, Battery, Obstructing Resisting Police Officer, Receiving Stolen Property and Assault on a Police Officer. Berreman was convicted of assault with a firearm on a Police Officer in Alpine County, Calif.
Berreman was sentenced to 4 years in prison in June of 2019, but release prior to serving his full sentence. Berreman was listed as having violent tendencies on the arrest warrant.
