Carson City area weather: Latest storm brings more snow, slick roads and travel headaches
Carson City and surroundings valley areas north, south and in between woke up to another fresh blanket of snow on the ground as the latest winter storm system continues to barrel down on the western Nevada and Sierra region.
As of early Sunday, snow amounts in the valley range around 1 to 3 inches or more, depending on the location, with around a foot ore more in the Sierra above Lake Tahoe. Snow will continue through today, with heavier amounts accumulating above 7,000 feet, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
Because of the complexity of the storm system, and its moisture tap coming mostly from the south, the latest storm carries with it snow, ice and a potential for rain in some places. For the valleys, there's a chance of ice mixing with snow and rain by Sunday afternoon, forecasters say.
Travel isn't advised Sunday. For Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon and Washoe counties in the valley a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 4 p.m. Sunday with anywhere up to 4 or so inches of snow for this particular system. For Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday with 1 to 4 feet above 7,000 feet for the duration of the system.
For Sunday travel, chains are required over all mountain passes including Highway 50 over Spooner and Highway 50 into Lyon County, according the Nevada Department of Transportation. For the latest road and travel information, call 511 or go to www.NVRoads.com.
The forecast remains on track with significant precipitation expected to continue through Monday. The threat of freezing precipitation will linger for Basin and Range locations overnight Sunday. In general though, precipitation rates will be on the decline starting late Sunday evening and more rapidly by Monday. Expect impacts to trans-Sierra travel to continue with snow continuing at higher elevations.
There will be a lull in precipitation for Tuesday as low pressure moves south of the region. Slight chances of lower valley rain showers will be possible as far north as Interstate 80 Tuesday evening while better chances of snow showers are expected for Mono County.
