First storm of November brings rain to Carson City, snow at Lake Tahoe
Rain and a few snowflakes arrived today around Carson City, a nice welcome to the first Monday in November after near-perfect sunny skies for Nevada Day weekend.
The long awaited first snow storm of the season has made its way into the Lake Tahoe area, bringing a sigh of relief to area ski resorts, skiers and possibly being a harbinger of what is to come during an anticipated El Nino winter.
While this weather front isn't supposed to leave much behind at lake level, the upper elevations may see over a foot of snow and in some places, two feet.
By Monday afternoon in Carson City, a few snow flakes fell around the west side, downtown areas and above 5,000 feet into the Kings Canyon area. A reader notes flurries fell on the east side of Carson City for about two hours. Rain with snow showers are likely by Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Temperatures will remain chilly for the most part around the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas through at least Wednesday, with highs in the low 40s. This may leave room for a few scattered snow showers in the capital city Tuesday and Wednesday.
For Lake Tahoe, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Monday, with light snow at lake level, and the heaviest snow along Highway 50 and over Alpine County.
Around a foot or more of snow is expected above 8,500 feet with some places getting as much as 2 feet. Around 4 to 7 inches is expected around 7,000 feet, including over Echo and Donner summits.
Travel over mountain passes can be difficult. The worst conditions are over Carson Pass, Luther Pass and Echo Summit. Ebbetts Pass is closed.

In the final photo, David Patterson took a photo of a boulder that fell onto the roadway Monday afternoon on Highway 50, about 1 mile north of Cave Rock tunnel. He said eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane.
