Carson City arrests: Man jailed for gun possession by a prohibited person
A 68-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Thursday for suspicion of two felony counts of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, a sheriff's deputy booking report states.
Rickey Eugene Olson was taken into custody at 1:23 a.m. in the 2200 block of California Street. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the area for a report of a domestic battery with a knife involved.
Deputies arrived, knocked on the door and the male, Olson, came to the door and invited officers into the residence. Due to a report from the reporting party that a knife was involved, the deputy asked the man to step outside to speak. He did and an interview was conducted.
Once outside, a female came to the door. A deputy asked her if anyone else was in the residence, and asked about the knife and if there were any weapons or firearms inside the residence. The woman said she didn't know anything about a knife and said there were several firearms in the bedroom closet, the report states.
The officer asked the woman what happened and she stated she was slapped by the man during an argument. The officer did not observe any outward signs of injury to the woman. The deputy then requested through dispatch a criminal history on the male suspect. Dispatch returned that Olson having a felony conviction on his record as well as a conviction for domestic battery.
Deputies interviewed Olson and asked him if there were any firearms in the residence. The man stated there wasn't firearms in the residence. He stated he didn't know why the female would say there were firearms in the residence. He also said there was an argument that evening but nothing physical took place.
Deputies then returned to the residence, spoke with the woman who said the two were not in a domestic relationship as they were only friends, that she did not live there and that she did not wish to press charges. The woman was asked again about firearms in the residence. The officer returned to the man and again asked him if he had any firearms in the residence.
The man stated he only had a BB gun. The officer informed him they would be contacting a judge regarding a search warrant. The man then told the officer he had a broken .22 caliber rifle. The man stated he would get it for the officer. For safety reasons, the officer told the man that he was not allowed to retrieve it. The man then told the officer to get a search warrant.
A judge granted a search warrant. Two firearms were recovered in the bedroom closet. The first was a Springfield Model .22 without a serial number. The second was an unknown Japanese rifle with a serial number. Olson was placed into custody and was read his Miranda rights in which he agreed to speak. He said he did not think it was illegal for him to own the .22 caliber if it was broken. He stated the other rifle was a 7.7 mm rifle that he had purchased in Reno three weeks prior.
He was informed he was a convicted felon and not allowed by law to have these firearms. He was taken into custody for suspicion of being a prohibited person in possession of firearms. Bail: $20,000.
