Weather service issues Blowing Dust Advisory for Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and southern Lyon
The National Weather Service has issued a blowing dust advisory effective until 11 a.m. Tuesday morning for Carson City, Carson Valley, southern Lyon County, Reno and northern Washoe County.
Visibility between 1 and 5 miles in blowing dust. Dust is causing unhealthy to even hazardous air quality for many areas. The advisory warns of poor air quality and reduced visibility.
As of 6 a.m. the air quality in Carson City and Gardnerville was in the "very unhealthy" category, while the Reno and Sparks area was in the "hazardous" category, according to airnow.gov.
Valley schools in Douglas County and Washoe County are on distance learning schedules Tuesday, according to KOLO.
The weather service advises people to be prepared for sudden decreases in visibility. Avoid strenuous activity, especially if you are sensitive to poor air quality, such as the elderly, children and anyone with chronic illness or respiratory problems. Consider postponing outdoor activities. Check airnow.gov for the latest air quality information.
Meanwhile, the weather service has issued a Red Flag fire weather warning until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening due to gusty winds and low humidity. The warning covers Western Nevada and Northeast California.
