The Lodge Assisted Living Community to sponsor SOLEmates Shoe Drive
The Lodge Assisted Living Community in Carson City will again sponsor the SOLEmates Shoe drive this fall to help provide athletic shoes to local students. The second annual event, which runs through September, benefits students enrolled in the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento/Children in Transition program.
The grant and donation funded program helps to provide shoes, clothing, hygiene products and school supplies to students who lack a fixed living situation. The program helped nearly 600 students last school year and is expected to help the same number or more this year.
Residents of The Lodge will kick off the drive during a shopping trip on September 4. They hope to inspire others in the community to donate as well. The Lodge has placed donation bins at local businesses to make it convenient for the public to take part.
The Lodge Executive Director Cher Haack says the residents enjoy giving back to the community. “Many of our elders believe that helping our area’s young people is very important, many remember tough financial times in their history and now want to help those facing similar challenges.”
McKinney-Vento Program Liaison Peggy Sweetwater says most people are unaware of how many children need help.
“It’s a silent population, the ones who need the most help often don’t come forward. We work very hard to ensure that these students get the help they need.” She adds, “Every child deserves the chance to play and be active, that’s why the athletic shoes are so important.”
People wanting to donate can drop off new athletic shoes at these four area businesses; Medcare Pharmacy, 1851 N. Carson Street, Mike’s Pharmacy, 1007 N. Curry Street, Play it Again Sports, 911 Topsy Lane #226 and The Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, 2200 E. Long Street.
All shoe sizes are needed, from Pre-K to 12th grade. For additional information call 775-283-9888.
