WNC offers driver education classes for young drivers
Western Nevada College is offering New Driver Education Classes this summer and fall that will help young drivers fulfill Nevada law requirements and strengthen skill areas that are usually lacking.
The four-session courses are available to those age 15 and older at the WNC Carson City, Fallon and Minden campuses, as well as in Fernley. They are offered on Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., plus one session Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3-6, in Carson City. The course cost is $100.
Saturday sessions are planned Sept. 19 through Oct. 10 in Carson City, Sept. 26 through Oct. 17 at the Douglas campus; Sept. 26 through Oct. 10 at the Fallon campus; Oct. 17 through Nov. 14 in Fernley; and Oct. 24 through Nov. 21 in Carson City.
If completing the course in person doesn’t fit student needs, WNC now offers New Driver Education classes online. Students can register at any time and have 60 days to complete the class. The cost is $90. Nevada law requires new drivers younger than 18 to take a 30-hour New Driver Education course if one is offered within 30 miles of their home.
In these classes, students will learn safe driving skills through lectures, class discussion, guest speakers and films covering Nevada regulations, basic vehicle controls and situational driving.
Besides an emphasis on Nevada state traffic laws, the classes will focus on areas where young drivers struggle: inattention, speed and space, patience and visual scanning.
To register for one of these sessions, go to www.wnc.edu/drivereducation or phone the Carson City campus at 775-445-4463 or the Fallon campus at 775-423-7565.
