Carson City's July 4 fireworks, carnival canceled; RSVP considers return Labor Day weekend
The RSVP Carson City 4th of July fireworks show and carnival has been canceled, but there is a chance festivities instead could move to Labor Day weekend, organizers said.
The Nevada Rural Counties RSVP program has hosted the 4th of July Celebration for 28 years. Proceeds from the event help provide elders in need with high quality services including transportation, cleaning services, companionship and more.
Executive Director and CEO Susan Haas said in a press statement received Monday that it was a tough decision, but one that ultimately benefits the community.
“It was a difficult decision to come to. Unfortunately, in discussing the limitations for gatherings due to COVID-19, as well as considerations regarding the social unrest we are experiencing, with key players such as the Fire Department, Police, The City, Carson High School, Parks and Rec. and others, I came to the conclusion that it would be best to cancel the event this year for safety reasons,” Haas said.
Haas still has optimism that the festivities at Mills Park will occur on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5-7.
“It is my hope that we can celebrate the 4th of July and Labor Day together at Mills Park this year and to conduct the fireworks at that time,” Haas said. “I am currently working with my team and local leaders to that end.”
