WNC Summer Classes Begin June 10 in Carson City, Fallon
It’s not too late to register for summer classes at Western Nevada College in Carson City and Fallon. The summer term begins Monday, June 10, and offers students the opportunity to earn full credit on a condensed schedule, or get up to speed on college level skills.
WNC has more than 60 general education classes and program electives available. Sections are offered on campus and online. Browse classes and register at www.wnc.edu.
Strategies for Academic Success (EPY 150) is a popular class for new college students; it explores studying techniques and tools to be successful in college. During the summer session, students can choose between three classes in Carson City and one in Fallon. In Carson City, Melanie Wadsworth and Kim Desroches will teach separate sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:15 a.m. to noon, and Wadsworth will also instruct a 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. class on Mondays and Wednesdays. In Fallon, Laurel Topken’s class meets from 9:15 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Preparatory classes are also available to help students brush up on basic skills before they take college level work. Summer offerings include Basic Writing III (ENG 98), Basic Writing Strategies (ENG 99), Elementary Algebra (MATH 95) and Developmental Mathematics (MATH 98).
There are two class offerings of Basic Writing III for the summer session. Marta Lauritsen will teach the class from 9:15 am - noon on Monday and Wednesday, while Henry Weiner has a class from 9-11:45 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday.
The course will help students improve their writing for school or on the job. Students will practice sentence, paragraph and short essay writing, paying attention to grammar, sentence structure and punctuation. In addition, students will learn how to combine sentences and paragraphs to communicate clearly and effectively.
Students have four options for Basic Writing Strategies in Carson City and one in Fallon. Ryan Stryffeler will teach classes from 1- 3:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, as well as 9:15 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday in Carson City.
Lauritsen is scheduled to teach the course from 1- 3:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9:15 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Thursday in Carson City.
In Fallon, Topken will teach Basic Writing Strategies from 1- 3:45 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students will learn basic English skills, including sentence patterns and basic paragraph development, as well as review grammar, mechanics, punctuation and spelling.
To sharpen and improve their math skills, students can take Elementary Algebra and Developmental Mathematics this summer. Nadine Branco will teach Elementary Algebra sessions from 5:30-8:15 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in Carson City.
Developmental Mathematics is a self-paced, computer-aided course designed to teach students the concepts and skills of preliminary, elementary and intermediate algebra. Laurel Brock has a Carson City class scheduled to meet 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
