Library Board recommends Carson City Center to go on ballot
The Carson City Library Board of Trustees voted tonight to make a recommendation to the Carson City Board of Supervisors that the City Center Project be put on the ballot in November.
The board voted unanimously to forward the recommendation without a specific funding request, leaving that to the supervisors. Earlier this week, Supervisor Shelly Aldean said they are looking at a possible quarter-cent sales tax increase to fund the City Center Project, aka Nugget Project.
Under Nevada Revised Statutes 377A, a quarter-cent sales tax can be imposed for the construction and operation of a library, if it is approved by a majority of voters in a general election.
The action comes in the wake of a continuing petition effort by another group hoping to put the City Center question on the ballot. According to members of this group, they have collected about two-thirds of signatures they need to get the question on the ballot, with more than two months left before the deadline.
If the supervisors agree with the Library Board recommendation, it could result in two ballot questions on the same topic.
Another issue would be the political hot potato of a ballot question raising taxes in the current economic climate, especially if the Board of Supervisors raise property taxes as they discussed earlier today.
We'll have more on this issue tomorrow.
