Karen Abowd to run for Carson City Supervisor Ward One
Karen Abowd, co-owner of Adele's Restaurant, announced her candidacy today for Carson City Supervisor Ward One.
The following is a press release announcing her candidacy:
Long time Carson City resident and business woman Karen Abowd announces her candidacy for Carson City Supervisor, Ward One. Abowd is co-owner of Adele’s Restaurant and Lounge and has been a resident of Carson City for 29 years. She has also been a successful interior designer for nearly 2 decades.
Karen is passionate about building a strong, vibrant future for all Carson City residents. The mother of three and grandmother of four believes the city needs to take an aggressive approach to recruiting new businesses that will create new jobs in the downtown core.
“Doing nothing is not an option. We need to be forward thinking; unless our citizens thrive and flourish, our businesses cannot”. She adds that the city’s future depends on the environment we create for our children, “I’m particularly focused on creating a community that offers jobs and a strong future for our young people. Too many leave because they don’t believe our area has enough to offer families. I want to help change that. A strong local economy benefits all age groups by providing necessary services as well as improving the quality of life for all residents”.
She continues “The city also needs to work with the schools to improve the quality of education. We will continue to face challenges in recruiting new businesses until we improve our school system’s performance”.
Karen has worked tirelessly to better Carson City. She’s president of the “Greenhouse Project” and served as chairperson of the Carson City Beautification Committee which oversaw the downtown garbage cleanups and founded flower basket program.
As a long time business owner Karen knows firsthand the impact of the current economic climate. She says “the economy has seriously hurt the restaurant business. Because of that, we have learned to do more with less, make cautious spending decisions, as well as cost effective decisions, knowledge that I will use as a city supervisor”.
Karen’s other community involvement includes:
Current Vice Chairperson: Carson City Cultural Commission
Member: Poverty and Economic Development CRT1
Member: We Can
Member: Community Relations Committee for Master Planning Committee for the Carson City School District
Treasurer: Carson City Downtown Consortium
