WNC baseball and softball open SWAC play in Carson City
For the first time in the seven-year history of the Western Nevada College softball program, the Wildcats will open their conference season at home. WNC will meet 13th-ranked College of Southern Idaho in doubleheaders scheduled at 1 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, weather permitting, at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. Coach Leah Wentworth said the series starting times could be adjusted if the predicted wet weather moves into the area.
"We'll do whatever we can to get in as many games on our fields as we can," she said. "Hopefully the weather holds off. We can play in the rain as long as the field conditions hold up."
The Wildcats baseball team will open with a four-game home series against CSI, marking the second straight season the Wildcats begin Scenic West Athletic Conference play at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. The series schedule has been moved up because of the wet weather forecast. Doubleheaders are set for 11 a.m. Thursday and Friday at John L. Harvey Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-5 come to town after playing seven softball games in Howard and Odessa, Texas. Wentworth's Wildcats have spent the past several weeks practicing and scrimmaging after splitting 10 games at tournaments in Henderson, Nev., and Yuma, Ariz.
"We are excited to kick off conference play with two back-to-back competitive series," said Wentworth, whose Wildcats play host to 18th-ranked Salt Lake Community College the following week. "We feel like the level of competition that we faced in preseason has prepared us for this series against CSI. We are looking forward to a competitive series and are so excited for our fans to see what this team is capable of this season."
WNC brings a 9-7 overall record into its baseball series with CSI (8-4). The Wildcats routed CSI, 12-0, in a nonconference game on Feb. 19 in Henderson. The Wildcats have played 15 of their 16 games on the road and originally weren't scheduled to play a home game until March 13.
"We are road weary for sure," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore of his baseball team. "We're super excited to play at home in front of our home crowd and on our home field. We're excited to meet the challenge of playing CSI. They have a great pitching staff and are well-coached grinders."
The teams were originally scheduled to play the series in Twin Falls, Idaho, where weather forecasters are calling for a 50 percent chance of rain and snow showers on Thursday and a 20 percent chance of precipitation on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures in Twin Falls aren't expected to climb above the mid-40s all weekend.
