High winds have moved into Carson City this afternoon with reports of downed lines, toppled trees and flying debris.
A High Wind Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Winds have already been gusting at around 40 mph since the weather system began making its way into Carson City late this morning.
Winds will continue to increase this afternoon, with the strongest arriving sometime in the evening, according to weather service.
Winds will be from the southwest 25 to 45 mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph Higher gusts of 80 to 100 mph are expected in canyons and wind prone areas along Highway 395. Sierra Ridge winds are expected to exceed 100 mph.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office has beefed up patrol today assigning reserve and volunteer officers to help with whatever damage the high winds may bring.
Meanwhile, a power line was reported down in the area of 220 East William Street at around 12:30 p.m. A phone line was reported down around Lompa Ranch and 5th Street. A tree toppled in the 200 block of South Harbin Street at around 12:15 p.m.
The weather service urges homeowners to bring in lawn furniture and wind chimes during this weather event as they could become projectiles. It's also a good idea to keep the small dogs inside, too.
